AUGUST 2015: FREE and GREEN STUFF!

This month is our 'free and green' issue! We've gathered a list of our favourite free stuff for locals - check it out below.  

There is also a lot going on in all things 'green' - waste reduction events, planting days, clean-up days, and a call-out for people to form a 'Friends of Pourewa Valley' group to advocate for this special nature reserve. Read on to see how you can get involved! 

READ OVER 500 MAGAZINES - FOR FREE


Did you know you can download over 500 popular magazine titles for free? All you need is a library card (also free) and your laptop, smartphone or tablet. This amazing service is provided by Auckland Libraries. Sign up at aucklandlibraries.govt.nz/zinio

FREE COMPOSTING COURSE


Pay-per-lift rubbish collections are coming, so now's the time to learn how to minimise your household waste. Auckland Council and Compost Collective are holding a free local workshop about composting, bokashi and worm farming on Saturday 5 September - come along and get a $28 voucher for the system of your choice! Registrations essential: phone 482 1672 or book online.

Meadowbank Community Centre has a free JP Service Desk on Fridays from 10am-12pm. No appointment needed. 

Have you seen the new-look East & Bays Courier? Consistently good coverage of local news and information with a new layout and great new columns by Nadia Lim and Dr Libby. If delivery is patchy, you can pick up a copy from the dairy at 121 Meadowbank Rd or these nearby Courier pickup points.

CAN YOU HELP SET UP A COMMUNITY GARDEN?


Meadowbank School is looking for a suitable location and people with gardening skills to help set up a community garden. They are the leading Enviroschool in New Zealand with their recycling and garden-to-table programmes, and their next step is a project to benefit the community. Read more...

WAIATARUA RESERVE PLANTING DAY


Waiatarua Reserve Protection Society held a planting day on Saturday August 15. Keen volunteers planted over 800 native trees, which they hope will bring more native birds into the wetlands. Read more...

MORE GREEN STUFF


August 30: Meeting to discuss formation of a 'Friends of Pourewa Valley'. 2-3pm, Meadowbank Community Centre. All welcome. More details available at facebook.com/events/827187964061619/

September 12: 'Rethink Waste' event in Panmure, 12-2pm. Practical workshops on waste reduction, and visitors can tour the community gardens. See tamakiwrap.org.nz for details.

September 14-20: Keep New Zealand Beautiful 'Clean Up Week'. We're keen to organise a local clean-up event. Send your ideas to mbsjra@gmail.com

NEW PLAYGROUND FOR RUKA RESERVE


Fences will be going up on Monday 24 August for construction on the new playground at Ruka Reserve (near the corner of Panapa and Norman Lesser Drives) in St Johns Park.
