The London Mayoralty 2016 - What Role Could Faith & Ethnicity Play In the Contest?

Last week, LBC conducted a poll that generated the headline “Only Half Of Londoners Happy With Muslim Mayor”.

There are two key Muslim candidates running to be Mayor of London: Conservative MEP Sayeed Kamall and Labour MP Sadiq Khan.

The poll suggested that 55% of Londoners would be “comfortable” with a Muslim Mayor; however 31% would be “uncomfortable”.

So to what extent would this apparent finding affect outcomes at the Mayoral ballot box in 2016 - if, for example, Labour’s British Muslim prospective candidate for Mayor, Sadiq Khan, faced off against non-Muslim Conservative front runner candidate Zac Goldsmith?

Do these factors have any meaningful negative effect at the ballot box in a city as diverse as London where 40% of the electorate are "non white", or could an ethnic minority candidate choice be in fact a benefit to Conservative or Labour chances of mayoral victory?

Survation have conducted new mayoratly polling, released today. The findings and accompanying tables are laid out in detail on our website here.
