Lawton Elementary School Building History
Our first request for information about Lawton was about the Lawton Elementary School building constructed in 1990 and its seismic safety.  We learned during the playground design meetings that the current Lawton parking lot was once the playground and where the current playground is located was the location of the former school building.  Lawton is one of the very few schools with a covered outdoor area within Seattle that many community members enjoy during the weekend.  Here is a link to the full history of the elementary school.  Structural evaluation reports regarding seismic events are available for all schools in Seattle Public Schools online, here is a link to the analysis completed for Lawton in 2009.  Many of these suggestions were completed in 2014 according to the latest online information.  Get involved by attending Seattle Public Schools five community meetings in September on the February 2016 Operation Levy and BTA IV Capital Levy, click here for the latest meeting information.  Want to stay involved here at Lawton with the upcoming playground remodel? Consider contacting Kristeen Penrod at Kristeen@scwildlands.org if you’d like to serve on the committee and look for announcements of Community Work Day events over the next year to help implement the vision.
Teaching is About Relationships with Mr. Terry
Our own Mr. Terry, Washington State's Teacher of the Year, was interviewed by Bill Gates regarding how to cultivate a growth mindset by learning from your mistakes.  Everyone makes mistakes, even teachers.  Also, discussed is the career path for teachers.  Click here to learn more from Mr. Terry and Bill Gates.

Lawton Community Playground Update
With assistance from the Neighborhood Matching Fund, we retained a landscape architect firm in 2014 to guide our community through a series of interactive meetings over the last year to gather input on the conceptual design and develop a shared vision for a new and improved community playground at Lawton Elementary. The Conceptual Design is now complete and includes recreational, educational, and artistic features and ecological enhancements. Many thanks to everyone who has participated and provided their input through the community process over the last year and for everyone's help in raising money for Phase 1 through the auction and move-a-thon. The Lawton Community Playground Improvement Committee is now working to take the design to construction ready documents and pursuing several grant opportunities to help raise the funds necessary to implement Phase 1 by the summer of 2016. Contact Kristeen Penrod at Kristeen@scwildlands.org if you’d like to serve on the committee and look for announcements of Community Work Day events over the next year to help implement the vision.

Want to find out what the kids are into these days?
Volunteer in the library!

Shelving/organizing
The library needs one or two people to shelve books and tidy up the library. If you can commit to one to two hours a week for the remainder of the school year, please contact Mrs. Gallegos at ahgallegos@seattleschools.org.
Book Fairs
We need someone to help organize the Fall Scholastic book fair. This could be a much larger job, and involves coordinating set-up, volunteer shifts and sales. This is also an opportunity to get creative with fun reading promotions for kids.

Full Day Kindergarten Fees
Seattle Public Schools offers full-day kindergarten, which provides young learners the time they need to engage in learning and build the social and academic skills to support learning throughout their education.  Research shows that children participating in developmentally appropriate, full-day kindergarten make greater gains both socially and academically. However, Washington State only provides school districts with enough funding to pay for half day kindergarten. To make full day kindergarten available at all Seattle Schools, the district must recover the costs for the non-funded portion of the kindergarten day by charging families a fee. Click here for more information about the cost for full day kindergarten.
Childcare Information
Child Care Resources, this organization helps families find childcare and have invited families to reach out to them. Click here for more information.
