Faces of The Village

Mark Fogg-Elliot, Organist at Boxted and Langham Churches.  As well as covering most of the Sunday services and weddings in the village churches Mark often drives out to Langham Church after work on Friday to practise his music.

Mark lives in East Street. Colchester and his home happens to be  next door to a drop off point for donations to the Colchester & Tendring Women's Refuge (see letter below).  The drop off point has very limited parking but  anyone who has any items they would like to give to the Women's Refuge Mark is happy to deliver.  Angela Mclauchlan (53, Straight Road, CO4 5RB) is acting as as a central point for donations and can then pass them on to Mark for delivery. The women, once rehoused in the community, often have nothing to start a new home with so any household items are welcome.

The Sports Pavilion has recently undergone health and safety improvement work and refurbishment by the parish council.  Due to financial constraints most of the work has been concentrated at one end of the building to enable the three sports clubs relevant use of the building.

Grants are to be sought for future work on the rest of the building which it is hoped will be available for community use.

Some images of the improvements made to the building by (including before and after photos):
The entrance hall has been cleaned, decorated and given extra overhead lighting.  A new door has been fitted half way down to enable the changing rooms and showers to remain private from other people entering the building to use the toilets and new kitchen. The showers have been extensively cleaned and had a screen put half way across to enable the home team and away team to shower separately.
The away team changing room has been converted into a kitchen which also contains a hand washing basin in order to comply with food preparation hygiene regulations.

This corridor, which allows access to urinals and toilets, has been given extra lighting, extensively cleaned and decorated
The men's urinals and toilet have undergone a transformation and the men's toilet is now a female/male toilet through the addition of a screen enabling privacy from the urinals.
The changing room at the rear of the building has had benches fitted which were originally located at the front of the building.  Fire exit doors, and new windows fitted, the floor painted to enable easy cleaning and the room decorated.

That initial attraction

Without that initial attraction most crimes could be avoided, statistics show that most crimes are opportunist crimes, yes they may go out intending to commit crime but the victim is not yet chosen. So if there is no attraction then you may not become a victim.

 What is the attraction?
  • The shed or garage with minimal security and tools visible through the window.
  • A lone person down a dark street talking loudly on an illuminated new I- Phone.
  • The house in darkness with the side gate flapping open welcoming.
  • That accessible open window or door.
  • The purse sitting in the open handbag on top of the shopping trolley.
  • Group sitting chatting at a bar table with a mobile phone just sitting there on the table.
  • The bag on the back seat of an unattended car, even though the bag may only contain your sports clothes the thief does not know this until he/she has smashed the window and stolen it.
  • The tradesman’s sign written van parked on the dark drive by the gate with accessible doors and unprotected pipe tube on the roof.
  • The partygoer that’s had too much to drink and is unaware of his/her surroundings.
  • Shiny new ride on lawn mower sitting on the grass in full view of the road with no postcode/security markings visible.

The above is just short list I am sure you can think of more. What can you do? STOP, think like a thief, spot the attraction and where possible remove it.
