Runs Around the Island
The next month or so has a pretty packed racing schedule around the Big Island, with two half marathons and biathlons and several 5ks and 10ks.
This Saturday, the Volcano Rain Forest Runs take place in Volcano Village. Runners who completed the Big Island Half Marathon and the Kona Half Marathon have a chance to finish off the Triple Crown with this race. There are also 5k and 10k distances, as well as free keiki runs. Stop by our Hilo store this afternoon from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. to register or to pick up your packet. There is no race day registration for the half marathon, but you can pick up your packet and register for the 5K and 10k on Saturday morning.
On Saturday, September 12, Bioastin is hosting the inaugural Bioastin Biathlon in Kona in support of the Kealakehe Waverider Tri Club. The 400 meter swim and 2 mile run starts and finishes at the Kailua Pier. $15 dollar race fee includes a race shirt designed by Endurance Conspiracy and a breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage and rice. Packet pickup and late registration will be held at our Alii Drive store on Friday, September 11.
On Sunday, September 13, the Big Island Road Runners host one of their most popular events, the Hilo Bay 5k/10k. This run starts at 7:30 a.m. at Reed's Bay Park and always attracts a great crowd. That same day, there are two events on the Kona side of the island - the Run for Hope 5k/10k at the Four Seasons Hualalai and Peaman's Wee and DLT Whirled Peas Biathlon. There's no excuse not to find something to participate in on that day!
For more information on any of these races and more, check out the calendar on our website.

The Better Part of Valor
HOKA ONE ONE's highly cushioned running shoes have been taking the island by storm in the last year. As the brand grows, so do their shoe offerings. One of their newest products is the Valor LTR, an all-black leather shoe. This shoe is perfect for individuals in the service industry who require a black shoe for work. The HOKA cushioning will provide a pillow-like feel for all of those long work days. We currently carry this shoe at our Kaloko store in both men's and women's sizes. If you would like to try it on at one of our other locations, call us at 808-329-9919 and we will send one over for you!

Honolulu Marathon Training
It's time once again to start training for the Honolulu Marathon, which will be held on Sunday, December 13. The Honolulu Marathon is the fourth largest marathon in the world and gives Big Island residents a chance to run a huge race without changing time zones. To help Big Island runners prepare for the race, Big Island Running Company will host free training programs on both the Hilo and Kona sides of the island.
The 16-week training programs begin next week, with an introductory meeting at 5 p.m. at the Alii Drive store in Kona today, August 20. Hilo's training program will start with their group run next Wednesday, August 26.
Runs in Kona will be scheduled to coincide with our group runs at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and a long run at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Alii Drive store. The Hilo runs will coincide with our group runs on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and a long run at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning from the Hilo store on Bayfront. All of the programs will require the participant to also have additional running days on their own.
There is still time to register for the race at the Honolulu Marathon’s website. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at 327-9333 (Alii Drive), 329-9919 (Kaloko), 961-5950 (Hilo) or by email at melissa@bigislandrunningcompany.com.
