Turbo Goose on the Loose

Keeping you updated from the inside!  This is my new blog to keep the Mayer community informed on what is happening from inside the walls of Oscar Mayer.  Don’t worry!  Ms. Cabrera saved Turbo Goose (one of our Delaware Chickens), after she had escaped the fenced in yard.  Next time you come by, you will see some new wood work that should prevent the chickens from escaping in the future.

We have been working very hard all summer to prepare for the upcoming school year!  Our staff has started to trickle in excited to prepare for a new year. Our custodial team, Ramon, Louisa and Carelia have worked incredibly hard to clean every nook and cranny.  Our building looks beautiful thanks to their high standards.

For those that have been watching the CPS budget issues unfold in the media, you are aware of the budget cuts that Oscar Mayer experienced.  Mayer received a $199,000 budget cut that directly impacted our Montessori and IB programs.  Thanks to the commitment of our families and the funds raised by Friends of Mayer we were able to make up the lost funds and maintain all programs and staffing heading into this school year.  Friends of Mayer and the Local School Council have worked together over the summer to analyze our prior fundraising efforts in hopes to launch an even more successful pledge drive, benefit and walk-a-thon this school year.  Every donation makes a difference for our children.  Please consider participating in the fundraisers this year.  Our fundraising must surpass our prior years in order to maintain all of our programs for the 2016 – 2017 school year.

We look forward to greeting all of your children on the first day of school!  Enjoy your last week of summer, and keep reading!

Principal Katie's Blog can be found on the website, check it out throughout the year for for updates and news.

Calling All 4th - 6th Grade Book Lovers
Battle of the Books is
Coming to Mayer!

The Chicago Public Schools' Battle of the Books program encourages ongoing reading, teamwork and partnership throughout the course of a year.  School teams compete against each other in a multi-round tournament, answering gameshow-style questions about the books they've read.  Sign-ups will be at the start of the next school year, but if your child is interested in participating and would like to start tackling the book list over the summer, email Emily Schaffer (eschaffer@post.harvard.edu) for a list of the first five books on the 2015/2016 list. (The remainder will be available September 1).

We also need a handful of parent volunteers to coach the team and to oversee the competition.  This is a LIGHT commitment, probably involving a handful of team meetings between October and January where students discuss the books, then helping the team through an online (and, if we qualify, a LIVE championship) round of competition between February and April.

For questions or interest, email Emily Schaffer (eschaffer@post.harvard.edu)

Let the Battle begin!

LSC Meeting

Thursday, September 10
at 6:00 PM
2nd Floor Library

Please join us at the Local School Council (LSC) meeting on Thursday, September 10 at 6:00PM in the school library. The LSC meets to discuss topics that are relevant to the long-term planning and education of our children. Our meetings are open to the public and any school related issues or concerns can be brought to the LSC. If you have questions or concerns between meetings please email oscarmayerlsc@gmail.com.
Celebrate the season with Friends of Mayer (FOM) for a Fall Fest after school on Friday, September 25th. Meet on the blacktop to learn about all of the exciting, collaborative things we have in store for the 2015-2016 school year. Looking to volunteer? We'll help you find a great spot! Wondering how to become more involved in FOM - all year long? We'll talk about that, too! Plus, we'll have treats for the kids, in addition to school extra-curricular activities represented at the Fest so you can learn more about the great opportunities offered to your children outside of their classrooms. Whether you are new to Mayer or not, the Fall Fest is the perfect way to jump into the action. See you on the 25th on the blacktop!

As part of the Bulldog Heroes community outreach program, we offer Mayer families the chance to volunteer off-site with other Mayer families on various projects. This year, we’re excited to offer five different dates at the Ronald McDonald House near Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Volunteer families will provide, cook and clean-up a dinner or lunch for the residents of the Ronald McDonald House. Please note, children must be at least 5 years of age to participate.

The Ronald McDonald House supports the needs of families whose children are receiving treatment at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. They offer families of hospitalized children 15-stories of care and comfort including 66 guest rooms, a rooftop healing garden, and a kitchen filled with home-cooked meals and supportive conversation. The residents are truly appreciative of the meals provided, as it means they can have some sort of normalcy during a very stressful time in their lives.

The dates available for Mayer families are: (times are estimates and will be finalized closer to the date)
  • Sunday, October 4 - Approximately 10-1pm
  • Sunday, December 6 - Approximately 4-7pm
  • Sunday, February 21 - Approximately 4-7pm
  • Sunday, March 6 - Approximately 10-1pm
  • Sunday, April 17 - Approximately 4-7pm

School Supply Lists

School supply lists for the 2015-2016 school year can be found on the school website www.mayermagnet.org. Please note, there is no online ordering system available this year.

Parents can drop off school supplies on Friday, September 4th during the meet and greet between 11:30-1:00. We are busy getting the classrooms and school prepared to welcome students, so please refrain from dropping off school supplies anytime other than next Friday.

There are so many ways YOU can become involved in Friends of Mayer this year. There are many jobs to be done -- and we need YOU!

We are looking for volunteers with specific expertise to work on new initiatives, to be a part of many recently created committees or to lead the following events next year:

  • Website Development/Management

  • Business Community Outreach (working with community sponsorship/partners)

  • Benefit (auction/event planning)

  • Beyond the Classroom (planning social/volunteer activities for Mayer community)

  • New Parent Buddy (welcoming new parents coming to your classroom/serve as a contact as they start ar Mayer)

You can learn more about the opportunities available to parents at Mayer by visiting the Fall Fest  on September 25th after school on the blacktop.

Please contact Jen Jones at volunteer@friendsofmayer.org
to lend your skills and support to our amazing school. We look forward to working with you very soon!

Moving Sidewalk Volunteers

This year, the moving sidewalk will be done on a classroom by classroom volunteer basis.  This proved to be extremely successful last year and we are excited to give everyone the opportunity to volunteer for the moving sidewalk. Each class will be responsible about 4 times a year.  Please be on the lookout for a signup from your room parent when it is your classroom's assigned week.

If you are interested in volunteering for the moving sidewalk on a more regular basis, we would greatly appreciate your help. Please email Jen Jones at volunteer@friendsofmayer.org with the dates you are able to volunteer.

Thank you in advance for ensuring all Mayer students have  a safe drop off and pick up at school each day!

Wellness and Sustainability Update

Bravo to the Oscar Mayer students who planted our gardens this past spring!  Most classes started seeds and transplanted their seedlings into our raised beds on the blacktop and as you can tell by the photos, the southern exposure and lots of rain helped to produce some amazing vegetables!  Purple and green runner beans, zucchini's the size of your head, so many varieties of lettuces, potatoes, swiss chard, purple peppers, beets not to mention the incredibly beautiful mammoth sunflowers and the crop of never-ending zinnias!  We left the giant bed of mint alone and let it flower creating a landing pad for multiple types of pollinators...it was literally abuzz with honey bees (no wonder our honey tastes so minty).  It is our hope to continue the gardening once school begins with some cold hardy plantings:  kale, carrots, radishes.

The bees have been busy and it looks like we will have another great honey harvest this fall.  Stay tuned!

Our chickens have loved being out of the coop to free range during the day this summer and one in particular gets an "A" for effort and ingenuity:  Turbo Goose actually dug a hole in the dirt, slipped under the fence and escaped from the garden.  Our superstar school clerk Reina Cabrera found Turbo Goose walking down the sidewalk and was able to pick her up and deliver her back to her own home turf!  Unbelievable.

We lost one of our beautiful Buff Orpington's this summer, the lovely Sugar Cookie.  Just like Lady Cluck Rose, she too died of obesity so we have asked that no one feed the chickens anything besides their chicken food.  Sugar Cookie will be sorely missed as she was a kid favorite and all-around nice hen.

If you would like to help with the gardens, the chickens or any of the other green initiatives we have at Mayer, please reach out to Anastasia Hinchsliff at adhinchsliff@cps.edu.

Fundraising 411

This year, Friends of Mayer (FOM) will hold three social meetings to kick-off our three main fundraisers. Each quarter will begin with a Kick-off Social (timing is: October, January & April) to celebrate past successes, look forward to the future and, perhaps most important, get motivated to raise MORE money to keep our school TOP NOTCH! The Kick-off Social will consist of a brief meeting to give parents an overview of the fundraiser's purpose, strategy and plan for this year. Then it is just time to "kick" back and relax, chat with Mayer parents and enjoy the great community we're committed to supporting. Please join us for our Pledge Drive Kick-off Social on Wed, October 7th at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que (934 W. Weed St) at 6:30 pm.
