Late Summer news from Studio Wondercabinet
|
|
I'm happy to announce that I'll be at the HP Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, OR, this October. I'll be participating in panel discussions and presenting my darker work in Artists Alley as part of this celebration of horror writer Howard Phillips Lovecraft and the C'thulhu Mythos. I'm currently working on a personal piece for the show that celebrates the "Expedition to R'Lyeh" theme of the event!

Studio Wondercabinet at Square Market
I've started an online store via Square Market, using Square to simplify shopping for residents of the USA. Friends elsewhere will still be able to purchase my prints, books and original artwork posted there; just contact me directly to be invoiced through PayPal and to estimate shipping.
Studio Wondercabinet at Square Market presents my books and prints more conveniently than my own site right now, and it finally gives me a place to show small original works and traditional-media illustration art. It is a work in progress, and new images will be added regularly.
If you'd like to purchase several prints, please let me know! I ship up to three art prints of any size in a single mailing tube at a single flat rate, both via the Studio Wondercabinet store and directly from my studio. If you're buying multiple prints on-line, contact me to save on shipping!

Currently in the studio...
I'm illustrating a set of images for the King County library system celebrating Autumn as "a season of songs and stories." The client gave me lots of creative freedom in developing the project, and the artwork is full of wonderful things. Birds! Amiable monsters! Lanterns at dusk! Also it's for a library, and promotes the reading of books and the telling of stories, so of course I'm having a great time.

A WIP detail of a personal piece in the studio now. It's waiting for more time-sensitive projects to finish up so I can work on it again. Because it is a personal work I have the opportunity to approach it intuitively, which is a rare treat. Intuitive work is hard to fit into a schedule so I don't get to use it on outside projects or even personal projects with tight deadlines, but it can be a real growth experience if there's time to play. This piece evolved out of a study of a live model that I sketched a while back and always wanted to take farther, and it's really hitting the points of illumination and inspiration that I want my personal work to address.
It's making me smile to think about it -- I love the work I'm doing now, but I'm also loving the thought of coming back to this one to finish it up.

This year I've been sharing a sketch here at the end of the letter that only my readers would ever see. This centaur doodle is a good example of a sketch with a lot of character that would ordinarily never make it out of the sketchbook.
