Sunday, September 13

Sunday, September 13 at noon right after our 10:45 service, our mission vision work is continuing to be fulfilled.  This day we will welcome strangers and open our hearts to serve an Old Fashioned Sunday Dinner to homeless, vets, women & children in shelters, seniors, Meals on Wheels clients, and our campus ministry youth. The areas that we need volunteers for are:  set-up & clean-up, cooking, serving, driving the bus & personal transportation and of course…baking desserts!  After serving the meal, volunteers will sit down and break bread with these people and share how God works in our lives.  There is a sign-up sheet in the administration building, sign up online or print the bottom card and return to church. For information, contact Karen Kranz.

Stuff-A-Bus

God's Work. Our Hands.

Saturday, September 12

As part of the “God’s Work. Our Hands.” community service day, one of the preschool buses will be situated out front for the week of Sept. 6.  On Saturday, Sept. 12 (9 am to 1 pm), all three buses will be sitting in supermarket parking lots (locations TBD).  A list of items for our backpack program will be handed out, collected, and sorted to be blessed on Sunday. There is an opportunity for everyone to pour yourself out most freely to others because Christ’s life is overflowing in you!

LS FOOD MINISTRY TO HAVE IMPACT ON YOUNG LIVES:

Volunteers, Desserts & Donors Needed!

Thursdays thought October 29

As part of our vision to reach out to community youth and the next stage of our Food Ministry, Living Springs is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to sponsor a weekly devotional pre-game meal for youth of the Ridgeview JV team on Thursday afternoons.   Ridgeview is the high school located nearest to Living Springs, and many team members come from very difficult situations and need a lot of support.

For 9 Thursdays, we need:
  • 6-8 VOLUNTEERS (men & women) to help serve the food – and more importantly, to interact with these young men to be examples of faith & caring in their lives.   We meet at church at 3:00 and transport our food to the school to serve the team. A pre-game devotion will be provided by Pastor and Lutheran Men.
  • DESSERTS for about 70 hungry boys each week.   Food Ministers Mark & Laura Cunningham are preparing the main meal, using a menu worked out with the coaches.   Desserts should be dropped off at church prior to 2:30 each Thursday.   Cakes, cookies, pies, brownies – anything is welcome!
  • MEAL SPONSORS.   All donations are welcome –make checks to Living Springs and mark, “Football Food Ministry.”   Thrivent members can use one of your free $250 projects for a meal!  Or, if you know a business who could sponsor a meal, that would be great (about $300).  Contact LMM President Bob Turnmire.
You can help just 1 Thursday – or several.   Dates are Aug. 27; Sept. 3, 10, 17; and Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.   Sign-up chart for volunteers and desserts is in the Admin. Building (or call the office).   May the Spirit tug at our hearts to respond to this call of love and grace!

ADULT FAITH MILESTONES

JUST FOR YOU!

This fall kicks off our new Adult Faith Milestone ministry, sponsored by the Lifelong Discipleship Team.  Please use the sheets in your pews to indicate your areas of interest.   They may be placed in the offering this Sunday or next (or returned to the office).  Upcoming fall & winter offerings will focus on Prayer, Marriage, Worship Life, and Vocational Callings.

Name Badges

On Rally Day, we introduced a special weekly name tag that was designed by our Good News Team. The badges will reflect the theme of the season and a key scripture passage.   Please stop at the name tag table and fill out a weekly tag when you come to church on Sunday!   Studies indicate that one sign of a welcoming church is the use of name tags, so that new worshippers and recent members can know everyone by name (rather than being made to feel like an outsider).

Sunday, Sept 6th at 1215pm in the FH

God has blessed us with yet another opportunity today to share God's amazing, unconditional love with others.  I pray you are able to pause and give God thanks for your many blessings this day.

We have a handful of persons who need to be trained on our Youth Child Protection Policies.  This policy states that anyone who is involved with our children and youth go through this training every other year to maintain a safe environment for ALL of God's children.
Please email Lexanne (Lexanne@LivingSpringsColumbia.org) to let her know which one you will attend, so she has enough materials for each day.

Rebuilding Year

Handbell Choir will resume September 1st at 7pm. We need 3 ringers to make a full choir. Therefore, this will be a "rebuilding" year, and we'll play lower level music; still challenging, but not too challenging.

If you've ever thought about joining, this is YOUR year. The adult bells include 9th graders through those in their 90's! We welcome ringers with open arms. We all learn, laugh and praise together.

If you have any questions, please call Laura Turnmire at 803-361-1143 or send an email to scturnmires@yahoo.com.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Psalms 98:4

Youth Bells

Are you missing youth music at the church? Kids are sponges when it comes to all kinds of learning and music is the brain's equivalent of a full-body workout.

If you have a child 3rd-8th grade that is interested in learning handbells, please contact Laura Turnmire, 803-361-1143 or scturnmires@yahoo.com

Lessons for Sunday, September 6

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a

These verses are a word of hope to the exiles in Babylon. Chapter 34 portrays God’s vengeance on Edom, Israel’s age-old enemy, which makes the path from Babylon to Zion safe for the exiles’ return. The desert itself will flow with water to give drink to the returning exiles.

Psalm (ELW): Psalm 146

I will praise the Lord as long as I live. (Ps. 146:2)

Second Reading: James 2:1-17

Faithful Christians do not show partiality to the rich and powerful of the world, especially at the expense of the poor and weak. Likewise, faith does not pay mere lip-service to God’s will. Instead, a living Christian faith expresses itself in acts of compassion and mercy for those in need.

Gospel: Mark 7:24-37

In Mark’s gospel, encounters with women usually signify turning points in Jesus’ ministry. Here, a conversation with a Syrophoenician woman marks the beginning of his mission to the Gentiles.
