Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers
We have another very full newsletter that highlights the achievements of Huanui College students. These achievements range from winning National computer hacking competitions by Zac Miller Waugh and Science fair success for Heather Nichols to sporting success for our netball, hockey and basketball teams. Many of our students are involved in a diverse range of activities and we do our best to celebrate their successes with the College community through our monthly newsletter. We do miss things and if a success was omitted drop us a line and we can include it in the next newsletter.

The academic year is coming rapidly to an end for our senior students  with mock exams next week and Year 12 and 13 students going on study leave at the end of the Term 3 and Year 11 students at the end of week 2 of Term 4. All senior students should be working hard studying for the upcoming exams and teachers have revision programmes in place. Remember if you are struggling with study ask for help from your teacher.

I have discussed in an earlier newsletter , sport is an integral part of Huanui College. With a couple of our teams attending tournaments recently, it is interesting to compare the preparation for a one off tournament or game to the preparation for exams.  Coaches and athletes work together to ensure their readiness to perform at the critical moment. This same approach should be taken with the exams coming up and the planning and preparation to perform at that critical moment (the exam) should be in the advanced stage.

A new initiative by the Arts Department was the “Night of the Arts” held at the Whareora Hall on Thursday 27th August. The night was a real celebration of the performing and visual arts and was a chance for performers to showcase their talents in front of an audience of friends, classmates and family. The evening was a great success and should be a fixture on the calendar every year. A big thank you to everyone involved as it was a real team effort. A special mention must be made of Ms Evans who got the idea off the ground and was integral in its successful running.

On the staffing front Mr Seitzer is leaving Huanui College at the end of this Term to pursue his business in luxury camping. We wish Mr Seitzer and his wife all the best in their new venture.

Ms Evans will be going on maternity leave two weeks into the 4th Term after her IGCSE students have sat their exam. We will all miss Ms Evans and everything she adds to the fabric of the College, but wish her and her husband well on the birth of their first baby and we will welcome her back in Term 3 of 2016.

Enrolments are well underway for 2016 and if you know any families that are interested in joining the Huanui College community, please encourage them to attend a guided tour on a Friday morning. There are spaces in most year levels, although Year 8 for 2016 is becoming quite full.

This will be the last newsletter before the Term 3 holidays, so I trust the rest of the school term goes well for everyone connected with the College and look forward to a productive Term 4.

Design A Flag Competition

With the current debate on our NZ Flag we will be inviting students to come up with a design for a Huanui Flag. The design must symbolise our college. It can, but does not have to, include the school’s logo and motto. It can be drawn, painted, a collage creation or computer designed. The size must be A4. Students are to submit a blurb with their design that briefly explains the process they went through and the choices they made. There will be prizes for the top three. The designs will also feature in the School Magazine. And maybe we can even create an actual flag! All entries must be in to Mrs Irwin no later than Week One, Term Four. No late entries can be accepted.

UNISS Upper North Island Secondary Schools

Huanui College - Runners Up D Grade
This was a first for Huanui College Netball and what a successful tournament it was.  There were 112 teams competing across the grades from all over the upper North Island. As we had never been before we were put in the D grade.  This can be a challenging grade as teams from the other grades who missed a year going to UNISS have to start again in the D grade.  So we were up against the unknown. Huanui College Tournament Hockey Team

Huanui College Tournament Hockey Team ventured down to North Harbour to play a Kristen College Mixed X1 Hockey Team. Playing on their very own ‘Wet Dress’ Artificial Turf gave Kristen a distinct advantage but the Huanui Team with 10 of the 14 players gaining selection into Northlands age group Representative Teams, were not about to let this be the difference. With both Teams playing open and attacking Hockey, there were opportunities at both ends of the field. Huanui College took just five minutes to get on the score card and from there on grew with confidence and displayed some very impressive passing Hockey eventually slotting 10 goals to 2. Three Year 8 players took the field, Will Potter, Aidan Jeeves and Campbell Mortimer displaying skills matching their older opponents, had tremendous games. Oliver Hawker scored a Hatrick with Ethan Codlin named as ‘Player of the Game’ by the opposition coach. We are hoping this will become an annual fixture.

I personally would like to thank the students for the way they held themselves on and off the field and represented Huanui College with pride.
