Upcoming:
Friday, October 2nd - Last day for students to drop Fall 2015 classes without grade penalty. Last day to change grade option from A-F to P/F, 5:00 p.m. Visit University Registrar in 250 Student Services Building to process a grade change option. If you are enrolled in only one course, you cannot drop your final hours, but must officially resign from the university for the semester. Your refund will be calculated according to the university refund policy on resignations.

2015 Architecture Grad, Nicholas Cotes, is the recipient of the prestigious 2015 SOM Prize, a $50,000 research and travel fellowship that enables one outstanding applicant the opportunity to travel in connection with carrying out in-depth research on a subject of their choosing, to meet with other professionals in the field, and to pursue study outside the realm of established patterns. Ashleigh Otto (IDS) was featured in this video about the lattice structure that was designed here at Virginia Tech, and was put on display up in Boston's Rose Kennedy Greenway this summer.

Lauren Fabin (ITDS) has received a $30,000 scholarship from the Angelo Donghia Foundation's 2015 Student Scholarship Program in Interior Design. This scholarship awards scholarships to promising students who are entering their senior year in a baccalaureate degree program in interior design. Congratulations, Lauren! Read more here.

Oretola Thomas (WAAC ARCH) & Vicky Arias (WAAC ARCH) received an honorable mention for their Steel Competition entry. The 2014-2015 Steel Design Student Competition offered architecture students the opportunity to compete in two separate categories. In July, the jury selected 6 prize winners and 10 honorable mentions out of over 500 entries. Their project was titled Alley InTension, you can view it here. Their faculty sponsor was Susan Piedmont-Palladino, Architecture Professor teaching at the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center.

Check out this article about the MASS Design Group bringing social design to Boston. Nathan King (Assistant Professor, ARCH) is the MASS director of research. This project was also in collaboration with Virginia Tech's Center for Design Research and Autodesk, Inc. Read more here and here.
Mintai Kim (Associate Professor, LAR) presented a paper titled "Mapping the Place Identity of Insa-Dong, Korea" at the 2015 Digital Landscape Architecture (DLA) conference held in Dessau, Germany, June 3-7, 2015. The theme of the conference was "Systems Thinking in Landscape Planning and Design." He received the 2nd best paper award. The awarded papers were pre-selected among full papers submitted for the conference by the reviewers prior to the conference.
Professor of Architecture Markus Breitschmid has been awarded an honorary medal by the Colegio de Arquitectos del Perú, the professional association of Peruvian architects. Breitschmid received the honor in a ceremony at the National Auditorium of the Colegio de Arquitectos del Perú, in the capitol city of Lima from the association’s president Jose Enrique Arispe Chavez, with the presence of academic and professional representatives and other invited guests on May 21, 2015. more

Mitzi Vernon will be leaving A+D this Fall as she was appointed Dean of the College of Architecture at the University of Kentucky which offers professional degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level: architecture, interior design, and historic preservation. Mitzi's leadership, teaching, scholarship and service to VT at large will be missed throughout A+D. I know that she will bring a similar passion and commitment to her new institution.
