Class News:

First Grade

The First Grade class has been exploring animals and plants in the first science unit from our interactive curriculum. The students observed and discussed similarities and differences between animals of the same kind with a virtual field trip to the zoo and a fun act-it-out animal guessing game. The first graders turned into adorable meerkats, elephants, parrots, seals and more! They also participated in a hands-on experiment to experience how blubber keeps animals warm in cold water and compared plant and animal offspring with their parents. This week Eithne Feild (mother of Huon) treated us to a fun activity to enhance our learning about how different plant parts help them survive and grow. Our little scientists are off to a super start!

4th Grade

4th Grade is off to a great start! The class has been busy reflecting, analyzing, writing, and presenting concepts from summer reading. Students have also enjoyed meeting and reading with their 1st Grade Reading Buddies! Math lessons have been focused on place value, addition, subtraction, and estimating. Students have also been making their own set of flash cards to use when reviewing multiplication facts. In social studies, 4th graders spent time gathering information and are working to complete a class time line showing major events in their lives over the past decade. Using the new science curriculum, the class has started studying plant structures. The sunflowers, cotton, and tomato plants in the school garden have been an asset to our study. Students also conducted a lab using celery to enhance their understanding of the vascular system. We are looking forward to an exciting year of learning!
