Powerful Connections
C. Kavin Rowe, a professor at Duke Divinity School, says “we have become so specialized that we have largely forgotten how to see the connections between all the various strands that make up our lives. But for Christians, making the connections is not an option.”  Rowe goes on to talk about our need to see how everyone and everything relates to Christ, the Lord of all.

Exploring that idea a little further, I would suggest that if we’re all related to Christ, and Christ is at the heart of everything we do, we are also related to one another through him. It is in our connectedness – the bond we have with each other in Christ – that we experience the presence of the Holy Spirit and discover what it means to be the body of Christ. Apart from each other, we cannot fully know the power of God’s Spirit.

The power of unity is why we gather on Sunday mornings: to be renewed in the presence of Christ, to become his body once again, and to share our gratitude through worship and praise.

The power of community is why we return after summer vacations or weekends at the beach or mountain getaways¸ bringing recharged minds and bodies to the place where the ultimate refreshment – the restoration of our souls – can be experienced again and again in the midst of our fellowship.

The power of connectedness is why MPC does not exist in isolation, but as a vital part of a larger church – a connectional church that links us with disciples and apostles across the country and around the globe.

That’s why I’m inviting you to gather for an early-morning conversation on September 13th, the first Sunday of our fall schedule. The weather may still be hot, but we can always use a little “spiritual warm-up.”

Please join us at 8:15 as we launch this new season with, “Why Are We Presbyterian?” Through the fall and winter months, Nikki and I will host discussions on a wide variety of topics to “warm us up” for worship (at 9:15 and 11:00). We may even take requests!

Everyone is welcome to connect with God’s community!

Thank you for living your faith at MPC.

Anticipating a great new season,

PLUS a “Spiritual Warm-Up” with our pastors at 8:15!

Sewing Sessions to Make Pillowcase Dresses

Since Compassion Corps brought 88 Pillowcase dresses to Uganda this past month, we need help to sew more! The next group of dresses will go to Liberia in January, when four new orphanages will be visited.

Our sewing sessions are on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 pm at Betty Luzier’s home. The next session is September 10. For more information, contact Betty Luzier at (610)357-1523 or email her at betluzier@verizon.net.
Join us in prayer in the prayer room (back of Room 101) after the 10 a.m. service.

This week's prayer:

Get into the habit of dealing with God about everything.  Unless in the first waking moment of the day you learn to fling the door wide back and let God in, you will work on a wrong level all day; but swing the door wide open and pray to your Father in secret, and every public thing will be stamped with the presence of God.

My Utmost for His Highest  by Oswald Chambers      August 23

Our next volunteer day is September 26 at 9:30 a.m.,
the fourth Saturday of the month.

For September, we are collecting “Back-to-School” lunch packs which include any individually pre-packaged items or bulk items that require no refrigeration, such as: pretzels, popcorn, chips, peanut butter crackers, Goldfish® crackers, applesauce or fresh apples, pudding, Jell-O®, juice boxes, Yoo-hoo chocolate drinks, Uncrustables® sandwiches, jars of peanut butter and jelly, cans of tuna fish, jars of mayonnaise, and storage bags such as quart-size or snack size Ziploc® bags.

The Food Bank always needs non-food items which food stamps don’t cover, such as: diapers, baby wipes, dish & clothing detergent, toothpaste, feminine products, paper towels, shampoo, soap & toilet paper. They are very low on all sizes of diapers this month. Items can be left in the “Food Bank” bin in the church kitchen.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Support the helpHOPELive Yard Sale

Saturday, September 19

Ethan Kairer, a member of our community, suffered a serious spinal cord injury through a swimming accident in 2014. He is undergoing intense therapy to recover his strength and the use of his legs, and is making slow but steady progress.

A fundraiser sponsored by
HelpHOPELive is being held to benefit Ethan.
The event, which is part of the “Great Media Garage Sale,” is
Sat., Sept. 19 at 319 N. Edgmont Ave. Our goal with this sale is to help raise funds for at least 10 hrs. of specialized therapy services ($1,000) to help Ethan walk again. Media Presbyterian Church has a unique opportunity to “Love God and Our Neighbor” by helping to support this event.

How can MPC members help?

1. Donate special items to be sold. Drop them off in Dale Hall in the box labeled, “HelpHOPELive.” Please contact Julie Havel in advance if you have a heavy, bulky or large donation.

2. Lend supplies such as folding tables, tarps, easy up or portable hanging clothing racks to help at the yard sale.

3. Volunteer to help staff the sale from 7-9am, 9-11am or 11am-1pm on Sat. 9/19.

4. Help get the word out about this yard sale, being held at 319 N. Edgmont Ave. on Saturday 9/19. Use this link for more information.

Please email Julie Havel or call her at 484-682-7605 if you have questions.
