WELCOME BACK! We missed you!

See you at these HSB events:

Ice skating: September 18 (time TBA)

Run for a position on HSB exec:

The Honors Student Board (HSB) is a student run organization that provides programming for Honors students and works with administration and faculty to provide a way for Honors students to give input to the University Honors Program. HSB currently has several open positions on our Executive Board, so we are holding a special election to fill these positons for the 2015-2016 school year. All honors students are eligible for these positions regardless of how long you have been in the Honors Program and no prior experience is necessary.

All interested candidates are asked to attend the September 10th Executive Board meeting from 6-7pm in 1151 Jischke to give a five minute candidate statement. The members of the Executive Board will vote by secret ballot after all candidates have had an opportunity to speak.

All four positions are a part of the Executive Board and expected to attend weekly meetings on Thursdays from 6-7pm, attend at least 3 HSB events per semester, and to contribute to executive board discussions and initiatives. Additional responsibilities specific to each position are described below.

  • Secretary: Keep and make public the minutes of HSB meetings. Keep track of event attendance and tally the points for the Honors housing and FHP section competitions.
  • Webmaster: Update and maintain the HSB website. Keep and update list of executive board contact information.
  • Outreach Co-Chair: Work with other Executive Board members to provide innovative outreach techniques to target specific student populations, and work with the other Outreach Co-Chair to run the Outreach Committee.
  • University Honors Program Chair: Work with upper-division students to encourage participation within Honors Program activities. Develop and implement upper-division specific opportunities for students. Note that this is a new position to the board.

If you are interested in one of the open positions (or have questions about them or the election process) please reply to Ashley Overman (honorsga@iastate.edu) by 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 8th indicating which position you are interested in.

Honors Salons are scheduled!

We hope to see you on Friday afternoons this semester for some awesome speakers: all salons are at 3:10pm on Fridays in the Jischke lounge.

Information Meeting on the Goldwater Scholarship

The Goldwater Scholarship is the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate award in the fields of science, technology, mathematics and engineering. Established by Congress to assure the United States of a continuing source of highly-qualified scientists, the Goldwater is awarded to outstanding second- and third-year undergraduates who intend to pursue STEM-discipline research careers.
ISU has had many students win this nationally-competitive award, including Honors senior Catherine Meis in 2015 (see more at http://www.iastate.edu/stories/2015/05/meis), and an unprecedented four winners in 2014, when ISU was one of only five universities in the nation to have every one of its nominees selected as Goldwater Scholars (see more at http://www.iastate.edu/stories/2014/06/goldwater).

Two informational meetings about this year’s Goldwater Scholarship competition are coming up soon (they’re the same; you only need to come to one):

5:10-6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 10
1151 Jischke Honors Building

OR

12:10-1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11
1155 Jischke Honors Building

Goldwater applicants must be U.S. citizens, U.S. Nationals or Permanent Residents majoring in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics discipline, who intend to pursue an advanced degree that leads to a career in research.  Students apply during either their sophomore or junior years. (Goldwater defines “sophomores” and “juniors” as students who will be graduating between Spring 2017 and Summer 2018.)

The meetings will describe the scholarship, the application procedures, and the process by which ISU selects candidates for endorsement.  If you’d like to “read ahead” of the meeting, take a look at the Goldwater Foundation site at http://www.act.org/goldwater/ and at the profiles of previous ISU winners at http://www.honors.iastate.edu/scholarships/profiles.php

Truman Scholarship Information Meeting

The Truman Scholarship is the nation’s most prestigious and selective award for students who will become change agents in the public sector, improving the ways in which government agencies, nonprofit organizations or educational institutions serve the public.  50-60 students are selected as Truman Scholars each year on the basis of their leadership potential, intellectual ability, and likelihood of “making a difference.”

The scholarship awards up to $30,000 in funding for college students from a broad range of disciplines to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, or educational institutions that serve the public.   Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government.

An information meeting about the Truman Scholarship competition will be held from 5:10 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8 in 1151 Jischke.

Applicants must be US citizens or nationals, or expect to receive citizenship by the date the scholarship will be awarded.  Candidates must have exceptional leadership potential, have an academic record that warrants admission to a first-rate graduate program, and be committed to a career in government or the not-for-profit sector.  Students apply in their junior year, defined by Truman as those graduating between Fall 2016 and Summer 2017.  Seniors who will graduate in three years and seniors who are residents of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands or a Pacific Island may also apply.

The meeting will offer information on the scholarship, application procedures and the process by which ISU selects candidates for endorsement.  If you are interested in knowing more but unable to attend the meeting, please review that materials at http://www.truman.gov and then contact Dana Schumacher at dschumac@iastate.edu or 294-0172 for application instructions.
