Fall Sermon Series Begins Sept. 13

Calling the church a building makes about as much sense as calling a person a 2x4.  Church isn’t some place we go; church is who we are.  Join us in worship this September as Rev. Troy Tatum preaches a new sermon series entitled, “Stop Going to Church...and Start Being the Church.”

Sept.13: “Not Just on Sundays”
Romans 12:1-2

Sept. 20: “A Peculiar Life”
1 Corinthians 1:18-21

Sept. 27: “Into the Deep”
Luke 5:1-11

Faith Foundations is a 10 week small group experience designed to help you grow closer to God and to one another.  We will explore together what it means to be a follower of Jesus, how scripture can shape our lives, the power of prayer and other Christian practices, and who we are as part of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

We believe all of our members and friends can benefit from this experience, so we are offering several Faith Foundations groups this fall.

Update:
Thanks so much for your initial response to Faith Foundations.  We’ve had over 50 people sign up for groups so far.  Because Faith Foundations is a small group experience, space in each group is limited.
  • Our Sunday evening, Wednesday morning, and Wednesday evening groups are full.
  • The Thursday evening group still has space.
Please sign up soon if you would like to participate in Faith Foundations this fall.  If none of our groups fits with your schedule right now, don’t worry: more Faith Foundations groups will be offered in 2016 and beyond.

Click here to sign up for Thursday Faith Foundations, or call the church office at 991-5000.  Childcare is available on Wednesday evenings if needed. Contact Robin Blakemore to make childcare reservations.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
PRESENTATION AND LUNCHEON

The WellHouse is a nonprofit, faith-based, and Christ centered organization devoted to the rescue and recovery of women who are being sexually exploited.

Based in Birmingham, Alabama, we reach out to victims of sex trafficking across the southeastern United States. In our program, victims are given shelter, food, clothing, spiritual guidance, and other necessary support.  Any woman who has been prostituted, sexually exploited, or     sexually trafficked is welcome at the WellHouse. Regardless of race, color, creed, or religion, women in pain can be assured they will find love and acceptance in our arms.  In the care of the WellHouse, exploited women are empowered to reclaim their stolen lives.

The Ona/Ruth CWF group invites all women and men of FCC to attend their lunch meeting after worship on Sunday, September 13 to learn more about the prevalence of sex trafficking right here in our community, as well as the WellHouse ministry and how we can help with their important work.

There is a sign-up sheet in the narthex for you to make your reservations for lunch.  Please see Joye Taylor or Bebe Randell with questions.
History of Birmingham Tour
Wednesday, September 16
We will leave the church at 9:00 am and return about 3:00 pm. The trip cost is $15.00 payable the day of the trip. This is primarily a van tour with narration by Jim Langley. Time permitting; stops will be made at Vulcan, Sloss Furnaces and other points of Interest. Any site fees are covered by the cost of the trip. Lunch will be at Sweet Tea Restaurant and is at your own expense.  Physical requirements:  only light walking required.  Space is limited to one van. Email the church office now to reserve your spot.
Worship and Wonder Mission Project
September 20th will be a special opportunity in Children's Worship and Wonder for our children to participate in service: putting together hygiene kits for delivery to a local elementary school where there are children in need.  This will be a wonderful chance for the children of FCC to live the lessons of the stories they hear each week. We hope to see your child there!

Sunday Evening Children’s Programming
Bible Buddies (4K-1 grade) and Cool Kids (2 – 5 grade) will resume on Sunday, September 13. BB and CK begin at 5:00 pm with a snack supper, they have the opportunity to participate in Praise Kids, a musical group for 4K-5th grade, and have fabulous leaders who play games, tell stories, make crafts and learn more about God’s love for all of us. Come join us on September 13 as we begin a new year!
