Morning Edition's Close Listening: Decoding Nature Through Sound
Known for memorizing the songs of 3,000 birds and pioneering the use of recorders to play back bird songs to locate birds and map their habitats, Ted Parker was the world's most revered ornithologist whose scientific legacy lives on. Erick Greene, a follower of Parker's, discovered that squirrels and chipmunks copy the alarm calls of birds to evade predators. It's part of a seven-story series from NPR's science desk that explores the intricacies of natural sounds that few humans notice. Airs each Thursday through September 10 on Morning Edition.
