Cultural Space Coalition

Greetings supporter of arts and culture in San Francisco. Much has evolved since our first meeting in March of this year. Although at the start no one was discussing the importance of cultural spaces, the most exciting news is that we now have housing activists joining our cause, advocating the importance of cultural space, and reversing the over-gentrification of the city.

For the past few months we’ve been working to keep two major artist/light industrial space properties in the Mission from being converted into luxury developments and tech offices—please see below how you can help, including a City-Wide Rally on Sept. 10th, 11am at City Hall.

QUICK ACTIONS
If you have not already signed these two petitions, please sign now:

1. Reject the proposal to replace artist studios with tech offices in the 17 Reasons/Redlick building.

2. Reject the proposal to replace an entire block of artist studios, rent controlled housing, and small business on Bryant Street with a luxury development.

TOMORROW
  September 3rd,
City Hall, room 400 @ 1:30pm

If you’re able, please join us at City Hall to testify on the importance of keeping the 17 Reasons building as cultural spaces/light industry! Look for CAN volunteers if you want or need talking points. The public comment period may run late so please check the CAN FaceBook link, it will be updated every 30 minutes for the lastest news.

September 10th, 11am Rally at City Hall
Join with the city’s housing activists at this city-wide rally on the steps and in the halls of City Hall... STOP evicting SF Artists... STOP over-gentrification... STOP displacement of SF residents... STOP ...and let's pause for a plan.

We’ll continue to keep you up-to-date on related actions and projects, especially these three current at risk properties in the Mission:

"Beast on Bryant" (an entire block of artists, rent controlled apartments, and small businesses on Bryant St. slated to be replaced by a luxury development for the 1%)

17 Reasons/Redlick Bulding (proposal to convert one of the  few remaining large group fine artist studios into Tech offices)

“Monster in the Mission” (the plan to convert this building to a luxury development for the 1% is on hold! NOW is the time to demand the City purchase the property for 100% affordable housing so that no other Monsters can be built at 16th and Mission)

We’re trying to connect all of the city’s cultural organizations and supporters —please forward any contacts you suggest.
