2016 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing

The NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing honors high school women who are active and interested in computing and technology, and encourages them to pursue their passions. This multi-tiered competition includes recognition at the national level (sponsored by Bank of America) and at the local level (sponsored by Microsoft), serving 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and all U.S. military bases overseas.

Eligibility

Any U.S. high school woman in grades 9 through 12 is eligible to apply, if she also meets both of the following criteria:
  • She attends a high school in the U.S. or is a U.S. citizen attending a high school in Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, or on a U.S. military base.
  • She has a U.S. Tax Identification or Social Security Number.
Aspirations Award recipients are chosen for their outstanding aptitude and interest in computing, proven leadership ability, academic performance, and plans for post‑secondary education.

Prizes

Each Affiliate Award winner receives recognition at an award event, an engraved award for both her and her school, scholarship and internship opportunities, access to a peer network of technical young women in the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Community (sponsored by Bloomberg), and various other prizes — computing resources, gadgets, sponsor swag, and more.

Additionally, each National Award winner receives $500 in cash, a laptop computer, a trip to attend the Bank of America Technology Showcase and Awards Ceremony in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 5, 2016, and networking opportunities with Bank of America employees.

Educator Award Logo

2016 NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award

The NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Educator Award (sponsored by AT&T) publicly celebrates high school educators who encourage girls’ interest and participation in technology pursuits. Educator Award recipients form a national community of peers, share practices, and empower other educators to encourage the participation of girls in computing.

Eligibility

All teachers, counselors, administrators, mentors, and other educators who encourage girls’ interest and participation in technology pursuits are welcome to apply.

Prizes

Each Educator Award recipient receives $250 cash award, recognition at a local Aspirations Award event, increased visibility in his or her school district and community, up to $750 for participation in computing-related professional development activities, and an engraved award for both the educator and his or her school.

Collegiate Opportunities: Aspirations Community and the Collegiate Award

NCWIT Aspirations in Computing Community

Thanks to generous support from HP, a college entry point into the Aspirations Community is available for technical women in college who weren’t previously exposed during high school. Benefits to young women who become part of this vast network include:
  • private invitations to virtual and in-person meetups
  • visibility for technical achievements
  • computing outreach programs in local communities for growing leadership and entrepreneurial skills
  • hands-on activities for exploring computer science concepts
  • exclusive access to scholarships, internships, and job opportunities

Application Details

A collegiate woman may apply* to the Aspirations Community at any time, if she attends an NCWIT Academic Alliance institution, majors or minors in computing, and she has maintained a qualifying GPA.

* Winners of the Award for Aspirations in Computing are automatically inducted and need not apply.

To apply, collegiate women must first register online.

The NCWIT Collegiate Award (sponsored by HP) honors the outstanding technical accomplishments of undergraduate women at the junior level or above by recognizing specific technical projects.

Volunteer

Technical professionals, academics, college students, and past award recipients 18 and over are invited to volunteer. Sign up to serve on your local Affiliate Award committee or to review some of the inspiring applications.
