Alumni Spotlight

Claudia Hasenhüttl graduated from CSUN in December 2014 with a Master's degree in Geography.  She worked as a research assistant at the Institute during the summer and fall of 2014, helping to develop the "Walking Guide to the Campus Trees," coordinating volunteers, and analyzing data for the Sustainability Knowledge Assessment. Working as a teaching assistant for SUST 300 "certainly prepped me for my current career path as a college instructor. Nothing can prepare one better than hands-on experience. It provides an in-depth look at what the job entails, not to mention all the great pointers one can get from a true powerhouse professional such as Dr. Cox."  Claudia feels fortunate that she was able to be a part of the Institute and enjoys fond memories of her time with us!
Take a hike!
We now have 4 Tree Walk Guides that provide photos and information about featured trees throughout campus. Each walk takes you to a different area of campus and introduces its trees. Brochures can be printed from our website or picked up at Santa Susana Hall room 116.  Featured at left is the first walk, near the campus center.
Sustainability Curriculum Options
CSUN offers several curriculum options for students interested in sustainability. A popular option is the Minor in Sustainability, where students take three core courses and three electives from their area of interest. We also offer a GE Path in Sustainability Principles, and for Liberal Studies students in the Interdisciplinary Studies B.A., there is a Sustainability Track!  Learn More
Matasphere students arrive
CSUN offers several themed living communities (TLCs) for students living on campus. The Matasphere TLC brings together students who are interested in sustainability and environmental conservation to plan and implement efforts to reduce waste and consumption in Student Housing. 53 students currently live on the Matasphere floor. Last year Matasphere students commuted to Dodger stadium via bus from CSUN (above). This year they will be touring the Material Recovery Facility where all the trash from CSUN goes to be sorted for recyclables.
