Coach Beeman - Raising the Roof in Wahine Basketball
Head coach Laura Beeman returns for her fourth season at the helm of the defending 2015 Big West champion Rainbow Wahine basketball team. She and her staff have revitalized the Hawai‘i program in a flash, leading Hawai‘i to its first conference title since 1997-98 and three-straight appearances in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament (WNIT). In her three short seasons here, she has compiled a 50-37 overall record and a 37-13 mark in the Big West.
Beeman—the 2015 Big West Coach of the Year—guided the ‘Bows to a Big West-best 14-2 conference record and 23-9 overall mark. The ‘Bows opened the conference season with a pair of road losses, but went on to reel off 15-straight wins en route to capturing the regular season crown and a spot in their third consecutive WNIT tourney. The win streak was UH’s longest since 1997-98.
Coach Beeman will discuss what it is like to be the Women's Coach for the University of Hawai‘i Wahine Basketball. The challenges she faces as a female Coach. As well as the reasons why she chooses to stay in the islands while other colleges/universities try to lure her to coach on their campuses.
Bio Brief
Coach Beeman came to UH with nearly 20 years of coaching experience on both the collegiate and professional level. The San Bernardino, Calif., native established herself as one of the best junior college coaches in the nation before enjoying similar success as an assistant coach at USC and with the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.
Beeman spent her final two seasons prior to Hawai‘i at USC as associate head coach under Michael Cooper where they re-established the Women of Troy as a PAC-12 power. There she helped quickly revitalize the program with 42 combined wins in the last two years. In her first season, the team finished 24-13 and advanced to the WNIT Championship game. The team ultimately finished with the program’s best record in 17 years. In just two years, Beeman coached nearly a half dozen all-conference players.
One of the passions of Coach Beeman, her staff and her players has been getting involved in multiple service opportunities to give back to the local communities. The coaches and players have conducted free basketball clinics to youth on the North Shore and have spent hours helping at Waikiki Health’s Youth Outreach (YO!) program working with local at-risk and homeless youths. The team also sponsored a “YO!” Sneaker Drive at one of their games last season. The Rainbow Wahine have participated in the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life”, Special Olympics, and have participated in several elementary school reading programs.
As a player, Beeman was an All-American guard at Cal State San Bernardino where she set the career, season and game assist records. She graduated in 1992 with a degree in business administration from CS San Bernardino and later earned a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on counseling from the University of Redlands. She earned a second master’s degree in education with an emphasis in physical education from Azuza Pacific University.

As summer comes to a close and we send the students back to school, I look back to the speakers we have heard from thus far. Each speaker was asked to think about the concept of courage and how it has shaped or steered their careers. We have heard from four outstanding speakers, who have shared their unique perspective of the theme.
Kelly King gave us the viewpoint from being an entrepreneur, Jessica Munoz opened our eyes to the human sex trafficking crisis in our own backyards, Crissy Gayagas shared the challenges and headways of women in the military, and Meda Chesney-Lind walked us through the history of the women’s movement here in Hawai‘i.
The remaining two women leaders will be sure to further expand our understanding and appreciation for the work they are doing in their respective arenas.
This month, UH Head Women’s Basketball Coach, Laura Beeman will bring us the perspective from her 20 plus years of successful coaching. Our November speaker is a return guest, Maya Soetoro-Ng. The members enjoyed her presentation so much that we asked her to come back to update us on the current work she is doing. Both Laura and Maya are passionately building success in their lives and work, and in return shaping the next generation of women leaders.
Hawai‘i is a relatively small place, yet I am amazed and proud of the caliber of women that we have amongst us. Over the past 20 plus years, OWL has strived to bring our members dynamic, diverse and inspirational women leaders to learn from.
Next month we will have an opportunity to gather outside of our usual meeting place. OWL will be hosting a Pau Hana at the beautiful Outrigger Canoe Club. We encourage you all to attend and bring a friend. It will be a casual event with superb food, a great location and most importantly invaluable networking and camaraderie.

“Looking Forward, Looking Backward: the History of the Women’s Movement in Hawai‘i" "
Dr. Meda Chesney-Lind, who described herself as a feminine criminologist, is the author, along with Nikki Jones, of the book, “Fighting for Girls: New Perspectives on Gender and Violence.”
Dr. Chesney-Lind discussed historical highlights of Hawai‘i beginning in 1820 through 1845 when Hawai‘i was governed under the law of the “Hawaiian Kingdom” where women were allowed the right to vote and the right to own property. This changed drastically in 1850 when “United States” law (e.g., under “British” law) became Hawai‘i’s governing body of law and the women of Hawai‘i lost many of their rights.
From 1850 through the 1970’s, Dr. Chesney-Lind discussed various events, including efforts to rescue their voting rights and the 1912 Hawai‘i Organic Act. Also discussed were notable women throughout this period, including Harriet Bouslog, Hawai‘i’s first female labor and civil rights attorney and politician Helene Hale, who in 1963 adorned the cover of Ebony magazine as Hawai‘i County’s first (mixed-race) woman mayor.
In 1970, then-Governor John Burns, signed into law House Bill 61, “Relating to Abortion Law,” which decriminalized abortion and made Hawai‘i the first state in the nation to have this distinction. In 1971, the first Women’s Studies class was offered at University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa; in 1979, the first Women’s Studies Program was established, and since 2008 the Women’s Studies Department has existed.
Fast forward today, there exists a new kind of feminism such as in India where women are fighting for equal educational rights and better living conditions, and in the United States there have been positive strides in the disparity of women’s versus men’s sports.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2015 OWL Outstanding Woman Leader of the Year. In keeping with OWL's original purpose of bringing together the public and private sectors, we would like to present awardees in both the public and private sector.
Criteria to be honored include excellent leadership in one’s profession, in community service, and as a role model for other women. The OWL Woman of the Year should be an OWL member in good standing for the calendar year in which the award is given.

Dr Roberta Wong Leung has been working and living overseas for the past 45 years. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai‘i , the only girl among seven older brothers. She graduated from the University of Hawai‘i with a Bachelor of Arts in Travel Industry Management and a Master Degree and Doctorate of Business Administration from California Universities.
Roberta has worked in the international hotel field for twenty years. She has been a Professor at 16 universities for 25 years in Australia, Asia, and USA. Currently she is an active volunteer with the Lions clubs, the Ronald McDonald House and Kapiolani Hospital.
She has served as President of various organizations internationally including Lions Clubs, American Women Association, Business Professional Women Association, American Chinese University Women Association, and Travel Industry Mgt Intl.
Her love of traveling resulted in visits to 168 countires and 280 UNESCO world heritage cultural sights. She has two daughters who work for the US State Department in Washington DC and who work for Unviersity of Hawai‘i and Hawai‘i Pacific University.Her husband Aldrin recently retired as CEO from the YMCA Hong Kong. They retired to Honolulu recently.
