Last months picture was of Peak Cellular at 211 4th Street in Castle Rock. Originally an undertakers parlor in the late 1800 and early 1900, this building has also been a bakery, the Chamber of Commerce, and several insurance companies.

This BETTY LAMP was used in homes or workshops in the 18th century. They burned grease, fat trimmings, or fish oil and used twisted pieces of cloth for a wick. The top pan of this nesting pair could be used as a portable lamp. This artifact was a gift to the museum from Ms. Rita Bates.

Dinner at The B&B
On February 14, 1946 Manuel Perez was on the run from the law and hiding out in Castle Rock. He was wanted by Denver and State officials for the shooting of two Denver policemen. He decided to head into the B&B Cafe for some food after becoming hungry from his travels. There were several Castle Rock residents enjoying their meals when a few people recognized Perez and called the local authorities. Before Under Sheriff Duncan Lowell could arrive the unarmed Town Marshal Ray Lewis tried to apprehend the criminal but was unable to defend himself when Manual Perez pulled out his gun and shot Mr. Lewis in the chest killing him. Three other restaurant patrons were able to subdue Perez and take his gun away but not before one of the men was shot in the hand. Funeral services for Mr. Lewis were held five days later and were attended by about 700 people including Mr. Lewis' wife and four children. Raymond Burr Lewis is buried in the Bear Canyon Cemetery in Sedalia, Co. Manual Perez was did not turn 18 until June 19th, with him being a minor when he committed this crime he could not be given the death penalty but instead received a life sentence and was later killed in a knife fight in prison.

Volunteer Opportunities
Castle Rock Historical Society and Museum
Historian – The Society needs a volunteer to collect and maintain the historic records of the Society. Collect news, announcements and articles on activities and events of the Society to maintain its history.
Member Meeting Refreshments – Sign up to bring and/or coordinate members to bring refreshments to membership meetings. Cookies and drinks are all that is required, but your inspirations would be great too. The Society holds monthly program meetings for the benefit of its members.
Tour Planner and Organizer – The society and museum plan visits to local sites related to exhibits at the museum or tours to sites of interest to the historically minded. Past trips have included an historic tour of Denver, tours to local rhyolite quarry sites, tours to interesting sites around Douglas County, a tour of Glen Eyre (home of Gen William Palmer) and others. A Tour planner would arrange for several tours a year and serve as host for the tour.
Historic Marker Manager – The Historical Society has initiated the Historic Marker Program in Castle Rock. A local site with an interesting history has a metal plaque with a QR code (readable by a smart phone) with information and pictures about the history of the property. Twenty markers have been placed thus far. More locations certainly qualify. The manager would keep current markers up to date and work to add sites to the program.
Walking Tour Guide – The historical society and museum conduct four planned historic walking tours of downtown Castle Rock during the summer months. We could use more volunteers to conduct these tours as well as tours for groups by special request. School group walking tours are also sometimes requested.
Docent – The museum can use docents to cover for vacation time for museum staff.
Gift Shop photographs - The museum gets a lot of requests for postcards and copies of its old photographs. The museum could use a volunteer to arrange for some of its photographs to be made into postcards and prints for the gift shop.
