Hello you,

Another week, another email from DiS HQ.

This missive is about three things we thought might interest you. It'll only take you a minute or two to read, then you can go back to discovering which 73 of Taylor Swift's bestest friends she dragged out on stage last night... (Spoiler: Beck, St Vincent, Trousersnake, and "Phoebe from Friends")

1) Independent Music Playlist + WIN!
We were asked to turn this year's AIM Independent Music Award nominees into their official Spotify playlist. Then Spotify themselves - who sponsor one of the awards - said if people show their support for Independent labels by sharing it, they'll give us a few premium account codes to give away. Win, win.

If you've not already given our playlist a spin (and a share to enter our comp) here is a link: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4149291-from-father-john-misty-to-skepta--the-best-independent-music-of-2015 - it features Wolf Alice, Father John Misty, JME, Nils Frahm, Bjork and lots of other good stuff.

2) <3
With lines like this "music so lush and graceful you want to sink into it and let your muscles float away from your bones," it's fair to say Derek Robertson quite likes the new Beach House album http://drownedinsound.com/lists/recommended-records

3) Gender Agenda
i) Last year, we ran this piece about the lack of female performers at major festivals, which struck a chord with a lot of people (it was one of the most read things we published in 2014) http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4148139-guyliners--why-do-uk-festivals-have-so-few-female-headliners

ii) The week before last, I went to øya in Norway. It's basically the Primavera, Coachella or Glastonbury of Scandinavia. 'Twas brilliant. One of the best festivals I've ever been to, in fact (full review on the frontpage). However, I didn't even notice until I read a story in The Independent that 2 out of 4 headliners were women (Florence + The Machine and Susanne Sundfør), and that 56% of the Norwegian acts featured a central female member, plus 44% including international acts did too. The next time someone says it's because there aren't enough women making music, perhaps find this line-up that featured everyone from Holly Herndon and Jenny Hval to Kathleen Hanna's The Julie Ruin.

iii) However, if you really don't think misogyny in music is an issue, take a look at these replies to Pithfork's Senior Editor https://twitter.com/drownedinsound/status/636383600515096581

And with that food for thought, I bid you farewell. Have a great bank holiday weekend - it's my first August bank holiday since I was 16 that I haven't been to Reading Festival, and I really don't really know what to do with myself. Suggestions that don't involve getting in the sea are very much welcomed.

Best,
Sean
