Poetry in Plain Sight, Live!
Saturday, August 29th from 1:00-3:00
Join us for our new quarterly event, featuring our July, August and September poems on Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts. Special thanks to our August sponsor Bookmarks and September sponsor North Carolina Writers' Network. This promises to be a stellar event, including readings by poets John Thomas York, Joseph Robert Mills, Maria Ingram Braucht, Maura Way, David Poston, Gabrielle Brant Freeman, Tara Lynne Groth, Helen Losse, Kathy Ackerman, Ross White and Scott Owens. The MRC is located at 251 N. Spruce St, Winston-Salem, NC. Books sales, other than those with Press 53, will be direct purchase (cash or check) from the poet, so come prepared! Please support our poets who have lent us their words and their time for this project.

Bookmarks Festival
Saturday, September 12th from 10:00-5:00
WSW is once again gearing up to have a booth at the Bookmarks Book Festival. It will take place in the area surrounding the Hanesbrand Theater on Saturday, September 12 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Each year as many as fifteen members of Winston-Salem Writers volunteer at the booth to inform the public about WSW and invite interested writers to become members. All books published by members are also put on display. Please stop by at the booth. We would love to see you.

Indiependents Day
Saturday, September 19th
On Saturday, September 19, the Southern Independent Booksellers Alliance and the North Carolina Writers’ Network will host “Indiependents Day,” a chance for authors to learn about what happens to their books after they finish writing them, and how booksellers help books find readers.

Registration will be capped at 100, first-come, first-served: register here.

“Successful authors know that their job isn't done when they complete their latest manuscript,” said NCWN Executive Director Ed Southern. “They know their job's not done when the book is published. ‘Indiependents Day’ will tell authors—working in any genre, with any sort of publisher, including themselves—how to finish their job, and work with bookstores to get their books into readers' hands.”

Led by both booksellers and authors, the sessions begin with “The End Is Not the End,” which will instruct registrants on what an author needs to know (and keep in mind) once he or she finishes writing a manuscript and starts thinking about publication.

“Indiependents Day” runs in conjunction with the 2015 SIBA 40th Anniversary Discovery Showin Raleigh. Nearly 300 tables manned by southeastern booksellers will fill a trade-show floor that is Southern in its friendliness, social gatherings, and intimacy, and encourages many informal exchanges of ideas.

ARTSfest
September 27th from 11:00a- 5:00p
This year’s ARTSfest promises to be yet another hallmark of distinction. Cover Artist Diana Caldwell brings an eclectic collection of original digital, photo/illustration, fine art prints and paper goods inspired by the rural North Carolina farm where she lives and works.

Entertainment will be provided by JJBlue, Nobody's Business, The Jim Tedder Band, Dan Dockery and Gulley The Band. Lastly, in keeping with a new tradition begun in 2011, a honorary title sponsor has been chosen. The Sergei Foundation. a non-profit organization, based in Winston-Salem, works to save companion pets' lives by providing financial aid to families unable to afford emergency, life-saving care.

Shelby Stephenson Workshop
Saturday, October 3rd
On Saturday, October 3 Winston-Salem Writers will present a Workshop with NC Poet Laureate Shelby Stephenson from 1:30-3:30 at the New Winston Museum. The cost of the workshop will be $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Sign-ups are available on the WSW website by clicking HERE

Flyleaf Poetry Contest
Open for submissions
The deadline is August 31. There is no entry fee.

Prizes: The winning poet will receive a $150 Flyleaf Books gift certificate and will be a featured reader at the Second Thursday event on October 8^th. The winning poem will also be considered for publication in the San Pedro River Review, published by Blue Horse Press. One runner-up will receive a $50 gift certificate and will also be a featured reader. Winners will be selected by Tobi Alfier, editor of San Pedro River Review.

North Carolina Literary Review
Call for Submissions
Deadline: August 31
Poet Ron Bayes, a 2014 North Carolina Hall of Fame inductee, characterized North Carolina writers by “a willingness to share” and to support one another. As NCLR celebrates its 25th issue, we look back at the last quarter century and whole-heartedly agree. We are grateful for this culture of generosity and are thrilled to be a part of it. For this issue, in the spirit of that camaraderie, we seek articles on the community of writers here in North Carolina and interviews with North Carolina writers talking about their experiences being supported and promoted by other writers.

Recognitions
Congratulations to Winston-Salem Writers members Jacinta White, Lynn Byrd, and Janet Joyner who have been featured this August in the Camel City Dispatch Sunday Arts & Entertainment Section Literature column.

Congratulations to Winston-Salem Writer Kat Bodrie for her poem "A Found Thing" that was published by Baby Lawn Weekly. Her short story "Suzanne Attends Her First AA Meeting" will be published in Pilcrow & Dagger's August/September issue, and in November her poem "After Close Study" will be published in Slim Volume's anthology This Body I Live in.

Sam Barbee’s poem, Lost Frequency, will be published in an upcoming Main Street Rag; and his poem, Good Men and Glory, will appear in Kakalak.
