1) New Member and New Roles

Provincial Status of Women Council Welcomes New Appointments

francais
The PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women is pleased to receive new appointments on its nine-member board. Members of the Advisory Council are appointed by government’s Executive Council to advise government and educate the public on issues that affect women’s equality.

Kelly Robinson of Stratford has been appointed as Chairperson to the end of her term in 2016. Kelly has been a member of the Council for four years, most of those as Vice-Chairperson, and she has been Acting Chairperson since Diane Kays’s death in March of this year. Kelly brings to Council a strong feminist social justice worldview. She has professional experience and volunteer work with public legal education, women, sexual abuse survivors, conflict resolution, family violence prevention, and advocacy with people with intellectual disabilities. Kelly is the Program Coordinator at Community Legal Information Association.

Another member with four years’ experience, Catherine Rankin of Summerside, has been appointed as Vice-Chairperson of the Council. Catherine retired from a 33-year career in the hospitality industry and continues to maintain an active leadership role. She is a member of numerous community and business organizations and service groups.

Newly appointed to a three-year term as a member on the Advisory Council is Diana Lariviere, C.Arb., of Argyle Shore. Diana is a chartered arbitrator with an extensive background in Human Resource Management. Her experience in HR includes policy writing and presenting training and information sessions on a wide range of HR-related issues. Diana has served as Chair of the PEI Social Assistance Appeal Board since 2012, during which time she has taken the opportunity to highlight areas of concern relating to women. A longtime volunteer, Diana serves on several other volunteer boards and is an active member of the Argyle Shore Women’s Institute. Diana’s current focus is on freelance writing and, as a licensed PEI Marriage Commissioner, on performing civil marriages across the province.

“We are delighted with these appointments,” says Advisory Council Executive Director Jane Ledwell. “Council members provide a wealth of knowledge and experience and connections to their home communities across Prince Edward Island. Their voices and their hard work contribute to recommendations and actions of the PEIACSW to improve the quality of life for Island women and, by extension, all Islanders.”

Members of the public who wish to be considered for appointment to the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women can apply through the provincial government’s Participate PEI office, http://www.gov.pe.ca/eco/participatepei.

10) Looking for Participants: Species at Risk on PEI

Researcher Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown from Environmental Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island is looking for participants in a study about private landowners’ perspectives on Species at Risk on PEI. The goal of this study is to explore if voluntary stewardship can be used to encourage protection of species at risk on PEI. This will provide important information to guide the development of policy and educational programs about Species at Risk on PEI. This research is funded by the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Specifically, she is looking for any private landowner in Queens or Kings County, PEI. Knowledge about Species at Risk is not necessary for participation in the study.

Your participation would involve a private interview with Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown or her student research assistant who will ask you about your awareness and knowledge about Species at Risk on PEI and your perspective on their protection. The interview will be approximately 45 minutes in length and will take place at a time and place that is convenient for you. Your participation will be anonymous. In other words, your personal identity will not be revealed.

Interviews will be conducted starting in late August and continuing until November 2015.

If you are interested in participating in the study, or would like more information about the study, please contact Dr. Carolyn Peach Brown, 902-620-5066 or hcpbrown@upei.ca.
