February 2 - 7, 2016 MEXICO CITY ART TOUR
In February, 2016, Mexico City is the destination of the Contemporary Collectors when MACO, Mexico’s popular International Contemporary Art Fair, regarded as the most important art event in Latin America, will take place. The CCOC will have special VIP passes for the opening events as well as VIP passes to visit the Material Art Fair, Mexico’s first and only contemporary art fair dedicated to emerging artists.
Highlights of the tour include visits to the new Museo Jumex and the Coleccion Jumex, both housing the collection of founder, Eugenio Lopez Alonso, said to be the largest modern art collections in Latin America. Other museum visits will include Museo Soumaya, the collection of Carlos Slim (the richest man in the world), MUAC, Mexico’s newest and most exciting contemporary art museum, and the Museo Tamayo, plus others.
Time will be devoted to Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo with visits to their studios, Frida’s Blue House, Rivera’s murals at the Palacio Nacional and San Ildefonso College, considered to be the birthplace of the Mexican mural movement. A private tour of Casa Estudio Luis Barragan, the restored home and studio of architect Luis Barragan, built in 1948 and cited as one of the most influential examples of modern Mexican architecture. Of course, will we see Mexico City’s Cathedral located on the Zocalo, one of the largest city squares in the world.
Galeria visits are planned including OMR, the premier contemporary art gallery located in the Roma district, now recognized as the leading art scene in Mexico City. Founders Patricia Ortiz Monasterio and Jaime Riestra will give us a closed-door visit to their new gallery space plus host us for cocktails in their home.
Our days will end with visits to private collections and leading artists’ studios, including Pablo Vargas Lugo,Thomas Glassford, Maximo Gonzalez, and Jorge Mendez Blake.
We will stay at the Hyatt Regency located in the Polanco district of Mexico City and travel in two Mercedes Benz vans accompanied by art consultants and travel experts, Marisa Fernandez and Leticia Vasquez.
