Changes Happening in the Former United Church! The heritage building that was previously the United Church of St. Paul and St. Stephen has welcomed new tenants. Valley Cheer Athletics found a permanent location in the gymnasium in mid-August, the Valley Hub will be open for business soon, and sources say that another business will be relocating there in October.
Scott Hearn, a representative of Parsons Investments, states, “We’re really happy with the current tenants and the interest that we’ve been getting so far. There are still lots of possibilities for spaces in the church - including the sanctuary - and we hope to fill these with tenants who are interested in adding to the vitality of the downtown core.”

Update on the Kentville Library
Kentville Town Council made a presentation to Kings County Council asking for a financial commitment to the Kentville Library. They County wants more information before committing to Kentville library proposal. Read more.
Congratulations Open Arms! Open Arms has just celebrated its grand opening in downtown Kentville!
The Open Arms Resource Centre is the latest addition to the Open Arms family. It will provide a safe, warm and friendly space for anyone who wants to drop by their new location in a two-storey former office building in downtown Kentville.
The drop-in centre on the main floor will be open for three hours in the morning and two hours in the evening, six days a week.
In the mornings, there will be breakfast and coffee. In the evenings, there will an occasional community meal.
Besides preparing meals, the kitchen will be used to teach cooking classes.
There's also a clinic room which will be used for foot care and there's even a room dedicated to haircuts which includes a sink set up for washing hair. Read more

County Crafters: Tuesdays at the Kings County Family Resource Centre Looking for a place to go to relax and craft? Wanting to learn a new hobby? Want to meet new people? Come out to County Crafters where you can bring along your hobby and work on your own projects or come out and try some of the crafts that will be there for you to try.
You do not need to have children to attend this event. However, if needed, childcare is available.
Calling all Vendors! The Kentville Harvest Festival is set to go on October 3rd in Downtown Kentville’s Centre Square. This year’s celebration is including a giant flea market and vendors are still being accepted. The Giant Market is being run as a fundraiser for the Kentville Farmers Market.

Kentville Indoor Market
The Kentville Farmers Market has announced it will move indoors at the Kentville Lions Hall for this winter's Market Season.
The move is exciting for both the Market and the Lions Club who look forward to working together to keep the vibrancy of the Market alive over the winter months in a new larger space with better parking, and more accessibility. The first indoor market date at the Lions Club space on River Street is October 14th.

Weekly Youth Sports Night The Kentville Baptist Church is having a weekly Sports Night on Thursdays between 7 & 8:30 pm. It is in the hall/gym at Kentville Baptist Church.
Activities include floor hockey, badminton, basketball, volleyball, and whatever else can be crammed into the gym. The theme is simply fair play, fellowship, and fun. This is geared towards youth aged 12+. Parents can feel free to leave their children at the program (and do not need to stay).

Spaghetti Sauce
1/4 C butter
8 cloves garlic
1 medium onion
796-Ml can tomatoes undrained
156-Ml can tomato paste
2 t. Dried basil
2 t. Dried oregano
6-inch cinnamon stick broken in half
1/4 t. Hot red pepper flakes
Salt
Lots of freshly ground black pepper
Grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions:
Cook garlic and onion in butter. Add remaining ingredients except cheese, lower heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Add meatballs if using and simmer another 15 minutes.
Historical Moment
JW Margeson John Wesley Margeson built a mill down on Mill Brook in 1869. Margeson's was the second mill on the brook, after one belonging to Henry Magee
At his mill, Margegson built doors, sashes, carriages and sleighs, using the power of the water to run his machines. To help with the water flow, he dammed the brook's flow in two places, with dams known as the Little Boy Dam and the Big Boy Dam. The unusual names did not refer to the dams' size but to safety: their names indicated which dam was appropriate for the local boys to go swimming, based on the boys' ages!
Margeson's lumber was used for a great deal of construction in the town and at the new Dominion agricultural facility, now the Kentville Research Station; the facility's big red barn and the Superintendent's House (now the Blair House Museum) were both built of wood processed at Margeson's mill.
Besides being a miller, JW’s other claim to fame was that he was also the town’s undertaker. At this period in time, that meant transporting the body from where it was laid out in the family home to the cemetery. To do so, he had two black horses with all the funeral trimmings. And, if the journey was under 5 miles, he’d do it for free! This part of the business was eventually sold to the Hiltz Family which is now White's Family Funeral Home here in Kentville.
When JW died, the business passed to his son Theodore, or better known as TH, and then onto his son, Cecil. Generations of the Margeson family lived in the same house on Canaan Avenue until only a few years ago.
Conveniently situated at the top of the ravine overlooking the mill, logging trucks would come down from the South Mountain and stop in front of the house where there was a clearing. Logs would then be tossed down the hill into the reservoir of the holding dam below - perhaps the Big Boy Dam.

Thanksgiving Boxes: Fundraiser! KCA is selling produce boxes from a local farmer for $30, filled with a variety of produce such as carrots, onions, potatoes, turnips, parsnips and, depending on the farm/availability, also squash, apples, cranberries, sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts.
Pick up is in time for Thanksgiving, on Oct. 9 at the school from 3-6 p.m. Orders must be placed by Sept. 25. KCA gets $10 for each box sold for health promotion programs and the rest goes to the farmer.

Mature Subject Matter
A mother from New Jersey roams the hills of Lockerbie Scotland, looking for her son's remains that were lost in the crash of Pan Am 103. She meets the women of Lockerbie, who are fighting the U.S. government to obtain the clothing of the victims found in the plane's wreckage. The women, determined to convert an act of hatred into an act of love, want to wash the clothes of the dead and return them to the victim's families. The Women of Lockerbie is loosely inspired by a true story, although the characters and situations in the play are purely fictional. Written in the structure of a Greek tragedy, it is a poetic drama about the triumph of love over hate. Winner of the silver medal in the Onassis International Playwriting Competition and the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays award. www.centrestagetheatre.ca
Kings County Historical Museum: Kentville museum exhibit features a ‘brief’ history of underwear!
As society has changed and evolved, so has our underwear.
The Kings Historical Society presents A ‘Brief’ History of Underwear at the Kings County Museum in Kentville from late September to December. The exhibit focuses on the century between 1850 and 1950 and how culture influenced the development of undergarments over that time period. Read more

Question: Who is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the Library Parking lot? Will any repairs be completed before the library is moved?
Answer: Work on the library lot was contracted to Dexters Construction. Repair in that lot is scheduled to happen by the end of September.

The Town is gearing up to start work on a 2.9 million dollar Chester Avenue Upgrade Project. Interested parties who want to keep an eye on the work being done, timelines and project details can log onto http://www.chesteravenue.com/ to stay in the know!
The Chester Avenue upgrade, with an estimated cost of $2.9 million over two years, was recently approved for New Build Canada Fund dollars. The three levels of government will split the bill for the project. Read more.
