September 2015

Al weer ver in september is het academische jaar 2015-2016 reeds stevig op weg. Het on-campus en on-line onderwijs draait volle toeren waarbij we steeds meer gebruik maken van web-based ondersteuning. De nieuwsbrief kon niet nablijven en is vanaf nu dus ook web-based. Digitalisering van het TUD onderwijs leverde meer dan een half miljoen MOOC studenten op en biedt nu ook de mogelijkheid om met geselecteerde buitenlandse partners ons MSc onderwijs op locatie aan te bieden. De Nieuwsbrief bericht over de mogelijkheid in Colombia maar ook in Indonesië lopen initiatieven. Inmiddels zijn er weer een paar nieuwe onderzoeken gestart en vinden diverse PhD’s hun weg naar de aula komende maanden. Graag willen we u nog wijzen op de promotie van 3 Turkse promovendi op 20 oktober op het thema anaerobe membraan bioreactoren die m.b.v. Turks-Nederlandse fondsen hun onderzoek hebben kunnen verrichten. Op 21 oktober organiseren we een workshop naar aanleiding van deze ‘hattrick promotie’..! Overige nieuwtjes van onze afstudeerders, promovendi en stafmedewerkers zijn uitgebreid te lezen in onze nieuwsbrief met vernieuwde lay-out. Wij wensen u veel leesplezier!!

Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors for Cost-Effective Municipal Water Reuse

In recent years, anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology has been increasingly researched for municipal wastewater treatment as a means to produce nutrient-rich, solids free effluents with low levels of pathogens, while occupying a small footprint. An AnMBR can be used not only for on-site wastewater treatment, but also for the generation of nutrient-rich irrigation water leading to reuse and recycling possibility for agricultural applications as well.

Treatment of Industrial Wastewaters by Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors: Implications of Substrate Characteristics

The success of anaerobic digestion relies on the presence of highly active methanogenic biomass, requiring effective retention of slow growing anaerobic microorganisms inside bioreactor by decoupling the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from solids residence time (SRT) or the employment of long SRTs in fully mixed systems. Physical separation of particulates by membranes is an efficient tool to uncouple SRT from HRT.

Application of Dynamic Membranes in Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor Systems

Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) physically ensure biomass retention by the application of a membrane filtration process. The major drawbacks of MBR technology are related with membrane costs, especially for the full-scale applications, fouling and low flux. Dynamic membrane (DM) technology may be a promising approach to resolve the drawbacks encountered in MBR processes.

Organic Contaminants and Treatment Chemicals in Steam-Water Cycles

Boiler feedwater and steam have to be of high purity, because of the susceptibility of the steam-water cycle to corrosion. Organic contaminants break down in boilers by hydrothermolysis, leading to the formation of organic acid anions, which are suspected to cause corrosion of steam-water cycle components. The impact and behavior of organic decomposition products in the steam-water cycle are not well understood. While guidelines for organic contaminants are becoming stricter, organic treatment chemicals are gaining popularity.

European Junior Scientist Workshop (Last May): learn by yourself
The last EJSW took place in May 2015 and was co-organized by the Urban Drainage team (in cooperation with EAWAG and INSA Lyon): 22 junior scientists (mainly PhD candidates or Post-Doc) came to Chichilianne, a typical town at the bottom of the famous Mont Aiguille.

FreshWaterMill for the island of Johnny Cay
Johnny Cay is a very small island in the Caribbean situated in a natural reserve with beautiful coral reefs. The problem is that all the drinking water for the many tourists is brought to the island in plastic bottles. The plastic bottles are littering the environment. One solution for this is to produce the drinking water on the island itself in a sustainable way from the abundant available wind. The windmill will be a showcase of a sustainable water production and it will be used for educational purposes on the island itself.

RainGain final conference
The EU INTERREG NWE IVB RainGain project has focused on recent remote sensing technologies to achieve a finer urban water management and to build up resilience to weather extremes and climate change. Because the project is almost finalised, the Final Conference of the RainGain project was organised on 8 and 9 June 2015 at École des Ponts ParisTech in Paris.

A lot of rain reported!
The summer is over. At the beginning of September, a lot of intense showers were predicted and the KNMI even sent out a warning for dangerous weather, including thunderstorms and intense rainfall events. Thank you all for uploading pictures with the app. At the 1st of September, 51 people have installed the app on their mobile phone and 49 pictures (reports including self-taken pictures) of rainfall have been reported so far.

Teach the teachers at Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria
In the scope of a IHE-TUD NUFFIC project, we experienced one week of teaching in Pretoria, South Africa at the Tshwane University of Technology. The goal of the visit was not only to teach a group of 20 PhD and MSc students about drinking water and sewage treatment, but also to show the teachers of the Department Environment, Water and Earth Sciences our experiences in blended learning.

Nog lang geen duurzaam milieubeleid
Millenniumdoel 7: Meer schoon water, maar ook veel hogere CO2-uitstoot
Millenniumdoel 7 voor een duurzaam milieubeleid brengt goed en slecht nieuws. Het doel om veel meer mensen toegang tot schoon drinkwater en sanitaire voorzieningen te verschaffen werd ruimschoots op tijd gehaald. Veel slechter staat het ervoor met de CO2-uitstoot, die fors steeg.

Propopi
Dit is de huidige situatie in een arme wijk in Bandung: Een vrouw filtert water uit een put door een vuile doek. Het water wordt minder troebel maar de bacteriologische kwaliteit is waarschijnlijk slecht. Drinkwater wordt ook met jerrycans op brommers aangevoerd van een watertappunt buiten de wijk en daar moet dan veel voor worden betaald.

TU Delft MSc education in Colombia
This summer the Dutch Embassy in Bogota, Colombia has granted a subsidy for establishing a Dutch-Colombian academic network consisting of TU Delft, UNESCO-IHE, Deltares, WageningenUR on the Dutch side and Universidad de los Andes, Univalle, Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad del Norte on the Colombian side.

Last summer our section was awarded a project grant in the first call of the new STW-IWT bilateral OTP-projects programme. This joint programme of the Flemish agency for Innovation by Science and Technology and the Dutch Technology Foundation aims to stimulate bilateral cooperation between Flemish and Dutch researchers.

Clean drinking water is one of the basic necessities of life. To be able to guarantee safe and reliable drinking water, water treatment plants need to operate efficiently and constantly. Since the population in Bandung is ever increasing, there is a large demand for clean drinking water. The water treatment plant of Bandung has to keep up with this demand and therefore the plant has been upgraded about 40 years ago with a newly build part. But unfortunately, this part of the water treatment plant is not functioning as good as it could.

Inventory of water treatment plants in rural areas of Valle del Cauca, Colombia

Het doel van het project was het maken van een inventarisatie van alle waterzuiveringsfaciliteiten in het plattelandsgebied van Valle del Cauca, een provincie van Colombia dat een gelijke oppervlakte als die van Nederland kent. Om op deze schaal toch een goed overzicht te genereren van de zuiveringen waarover de provincie beschikt werd er vooral gebruik gemaakt van institutionele informatie.

Roeien met de riemen die je hebt

Omdat ik mijn bachelor diploma nog kon halen voor september ’15 was ik één van de gelukkigen die zijn BEP in de zomervakantie mocht doen. Eerst zou het Colombia worden maar wegens omstandigheden werd het Ethiopië. Voor mij maakte het niet zoveel uit, want ik wist hoe dan ook dat het een waardevolle levenservaring zou worden. En dat werd het ook! Toch leuk, om te zien hoe positieve verwachtingen hun weerslag op de toekomst kunnen hebben. In dit verslag deel ik mijn ervaringen met jullie!

Online education newsflash

At the moment 7 students are following the course “fundamentals of water treatment” online. Two of them are MSc-students from Qatar and Kenya. Three of them are from a Dutch Waterschap and two are from Mexico and Australia. These last 5 students are only following one to three course of the MSc-Track Water management.
