The energy sector: challenges and prospects at the middle of Peña Nieto’s administration

It has been three years since President Peña Nieto took office, and a couple years since the Congress approved the structural reforms. In a few words, the President referred to the success of the redefinition of the energy and telecommunications sectors in his Tercer Informe, he also referred to the positive impacts that the competition reform has started to yield.

He referred to the need to further these reforms in the following three years of his mandate, in order to provide Mexico with the platforms required for growth and development. In a context where there is volatility in the Peso-US dollar exchange rate, with low GDP growth, and uncertainty not only in terms of government expenditure in the future (with the base zero budget) but as well for foreign investment, the President and his team do not have an easy task in the forthcoming years.

It is hard to argue against the rhetoric employed by the government, which constantly reiterates that the energy sector is the core for development and growth of the country in the coming years. Certainly, the relevance of such is not only political but also makes economic sense.
