President's Message

Well, it’s been quite a summer.  A new state budget has brought many new challenges during a time that I am trying to come up with a zero increase in our Department’s budget.  All this comes at a time when we are handling a marked increase in work load coming from increased construction.  Add to that the increased confusion on the rules we guide our landowners by, and I’m sure everyone has felt the stress of our jobs this summer.  I guess no one ever said work life would always be fair or easy, right?

It should go without saying that our fall conference is shaping up to be a must attend event.  We will discuss shoreland zoning at great length so we can all understand the rules and work to enforce them fairly and consistently across our state.  We will have wetland training to help insure that we recognize and work to protect that resource so valuable to our surface waters, groundwater, environment, and habitat.  
We will have a POWTs update to keep us on the cutting edge of developments in that field.  We will have legislative and legal updates so we can keep our constituents, committee and board members, and staff informed of recent developments and appropriate reactions to them.  We will have many other educational sessions, a business meeting, awards, and updates so we can further our professional goals. What are your hobbies and interests:  Coaching Youth Baseball and Softball

What is something people would never guess about you:  I was born in England and have duel citizenship.

What is your professional/educational background: I recently graduated from the Master of Urban Planning program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

What are your hobbies and interests: I love to be out at the lake and at the beach. Beach volleyball is one of my favorite things to do each summer. I also love to travel.

Info about family: I have two older sisters and a brother-in-law who live in Pittsburgh, and my parents, who are still residents of the Troll Capital of the World, Mount Horeb, WI.

What is something people would never guess about you: I’ve been the online and catalog model for a local shop in my hometown that focuses around Scandinavian imports (www.openhouseimports.com). The catalog reaches about 10,000 people nationwide.

Facing strong opposition, Tiffany defends state budget's shoreland zoning changes

RHINELANDER - Speakers from the general public pummeled Sen. Tom Tiffany (R-Hazelhurst) with opposition to new shoreland zoning rules at an Oneida County Board meeting Tuesday in Rhinelander.

"Act 55 is a good example of how our state government is moving towards a state of anarchy," Karl Fate told Tiffany, referring to the state budget bill that included the shoreland zoning changes. "This law is a mess."

Many in Northwoods counties feel the legislation stripped their ability to protect their lakes and streams. The language, which Tiffany inserted into the state budget passed in July, disallows counties from keeping shoreland zoning ordinances that are more stringent than the looser state rules. This change means that, in some cases, structures could be built nearer to the water, shoreland could be divided into smaller lots, and rules regarding vegetation would be relaxed. Opponents of the change feel it could harm water quality, the natural beauty of the Northwoods, and even tourism in the region. For More Click Here
 

Spotlight of Jefferson County, WI

Department Name: Planning and Zoning Department

The mission of the Planning & Zoning Department is to regulate land uses within the county through the enforcement of comprehensive zoning, shoreland, subdivision and floodplain ordinances as well as related Wisconsin Administrative Codes to achieve those stated goals. The uses of land are regulated through a permitting process whereby applicants identify anticipated uses and structural setbacks and our department ensures compliance with the applicable codes.
