CoCoRaHS

Dear CoCoRaHS Classrooms,

It is that time of year again!  The CoCoRaHS "Rain Gauge Week" campaign is returning and will take place from Tuesday, September 15th though Monday, September 21st.

If you are not able to record measurements during 'Rain Gauge Week', please bare with us for the extra e-mails you receive, but there are still some valuable tips and resources below, so please read on!

We now have nearly 1,000 schools, teachers, home schools and other education-based locations such as museums, aquariums and zoos participating with CoCoRaHS!  For those of you who have not been involved in rain gauge week before, it is a simple opportunity for you to participate by reporting data - all during the same week!  If you are an educator who participates in CoCoRaHS at home, please consider setting up a gauge at your school and get it registered for reporting.

If you need help getting your school registered, installing your gauge, logging in, entering data or anything else, please e-mail us and we will be glad to assist you!

New! Contest to win a virtual classroom visit from the founder of CoCoRaHS.

We will provide more details next week, but classes that submit data during the entire 'Rain Gauge Week' will be automatically entered into a drawing to win a virtual classroom visit from Nolan Doesken, State Climatologist for Colorado and the founder of CoCoRaHS.  He will connect via computer and webcam and will provide a short lecture about weather and climate and will then allow your students to ask him questions.  Depending on where you live, we may be able to invite a local meteorologist or climatologist onto the call as well.

CoCoRaHS Resources

Please take a moment to view our video: Two-Minute Tutorial: How to Enter Data.

Other resources such as lesson plans, FAQ's, station identification signs and video tutorials can be found on our 'CoCoRaHS For Schools' - For Teachers page.

If you forgot your login info, you can retrieve it here or by sending an e-mail to: education@cocorahs.org.

Weather Resources for the classroom - from NASA and NOAA

As you know, there are countless resources for teachers in the classroom.  We wanted to provide you with two of our favorites:
  • We are in the middle of hurricane season, and there is a fantastic website called SciJinks that features a really cool hurricane simulator and a fun game called Hurricane Hero.  There are lots of resources found at http://scijinks.jpl.nasa.gov/.

  • The National Weather Service has an on-line school for learning about the weather: JetStream is designed to help educators, emergency managers, or anyone interested in learning about weather and weather safety.  We recommend clicking on the 'lesson plan overview' (left hand menu of the JetStream home page) to see the variety of resources on this site.

Questions?

We are here to help!  If you have any questions, we are only an e-mail away.  Simply contact us at education@cocorahs.org and we will do our best to help you.

We will be sending out another e-mail for 'Rain Gauge Week' next Monday to remind you to get your gauge outside and provide some additional tips for participating.  We will be looking forward to seeing your data!

Sincerely,

Noah Newman
