Timeline: 20 years of financing independent news
MDIF has been supporting independent news businesses in countries where there is limited access to quality news since 1995. Over 20 years, we have been privileged to work with some of the world’s most innovative news entrepreneurs. Here’s a 20-slide tour of our first 20 years.
 

Digital media innovator Mohamed Nanabhay joins MDIF as Deputy CEO
South African digital media practitioner, entrepreneur and strategist Mohamed Nanabhay has joined MDIF as Deputy CEO. Nanabhay, who as Head of Online at Al Jazeera English led the team that produced award-winning coverage of the Arab Spring, has stepped off MDIF’s Board of Directors to take the role. Read more.

MDIF clients provide news to more than 68.6 million people
The Media Development Impact Dashboard 2015 found that almost 70 million people get their news from MDIF clients. After five years of working with MDIF, client businesses grew by a median of 34% and their sales by 115%. Last year, 85% of clients exposed corruption and 79% held their government accountable. MDIF selected for ImpactAssets 50
MDIF has been selected for the ImpactAssets 50, a free, online resource for impact investors and their advisors, for the fifth consecutive year. The IA 50, now also in its fifth year, is the first publicly available database of private debt and equity impact investment fund managers. Read more.

Guatemalan President jailed after exposure of massive corruption
President Otto Pérez Molina, who waged a long campaign of intimidation against investigative daily elPeriódico, was forced out of office in September and immediately arrested after the exposure of massive corruption at the top of government. Read more.

Mabel Cáceres: Journalist-entrepreneur giving Peruvians a voice
In the second of our Women in Media series, we profile Mabel Cáceres, Editor-in Chief of El Búho in Peru, a magazine and online daily that provides an alternative voice for the people of Arequipa, reporting on issues ignored by national media. Read more.

Scroll journalist wins prestigious reporting prize
Online news site Scroll.in's Supriya Sharma has been named winner of the prestigious Ramnath Goenka award for Reporting on Politics and Government. She won the prize for her "Window Seat" series, written over six weeks as she took a 2,500km railway journey ahead of parliamentary elections.
KiniTV breaks 100m views within 8 months
Internet TV provider KiniTV broke new ground when it hit a record high of 100 million video views within the first eight months of2015. It also hit the highest viewership of 25.1 million video views in August. KiniTV is hosted on YouTube.
Jose Ruben Zamora wins top Guatemalan human rights prize 
Guatemala’s Human Rights Ombudsman awarded Jose Ruben Zamora, founder of the investigative daily elPeriódico, the Myrna Mack Chang Order of Human Rights for his "invaluable collaboration through independent and truthful journalism to fight for respect for human rights and democracy in the country." Mabel Cáceres wins award for regional journalism in Peru
Mabel Cáceres, founder and Editor-in-Chief of the magazine and online daily El Búho (The Owl), was awarded the IPYS award for regional journalism in November for exposing the authorities' framing of a peasant for protesting against the sensitive Tía María copper mine. (See main story above.)
Press Start: Crowdfunding stories that matter
Transitions, a nonprofit supporting independent media in the former Communist countries of Europe, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help it roll out a journalism crowdfunding platform. Press Start will provide funds for reporters in countries where the press cannot report freely.
