Put Your Best Foot Forward

The Fall Career Fair is right around the corner!  This signature event attracts over 200 employers and over 3,000 Pitt students annually.  With over 60% of employers recruiting for internships as well as full-time opportunities, students from all class years should attend, no matter where you are in your career process.

To help you put your best foot forward at the fair and in all interactions with potential employers, check out CDPA’s checklist of “Do’s” and “Don’ts” before you head to the fair!
DO...
  • Read up on employers of interest in advance!  Use the Pitt Career Fair Plus app, FutureLinks, and company websites.
  • Learn:  What positions they are recruiting for?  What are the core aspects of their business?  Who makes a good candidate for their positions?
  • Prepare your professional attire: Prep your suit, iron shirts or blouses, shine your shoes, and make sure facial hair is well-groomed.
  • Offer a firm, confident handshake and make eye contact.
  • Ask how to apply or be considered for the position.
  • Have your resume reviewed before the fair!  Visit ResuMANIA on Monday, September 21 from 9 a.m. -9  p.m. or check out any Career Fair Prep Week event.
  • Practice your elevator pitch, or a brief self-introduction.
  • Smile!

DON'T...

  • Ask a recruiter “So, what do you do?” Instead, start with your elevator pitch and demonstrate a piece of knowledge about the company.
  • Approach an employer before doing your homework.
  • Wear any of the following:
    • jeans,
    • sneakers,
    • short skirts,
    • untucked or unironed dress shirts,
    • low-cut tops,
    • casual/sloppy clothing, or
    • uncomfortable shoes that you can’t walk in.
