WHO Europe to adopt first physical activity strategy

Now it’s time for other regions to follow suit

Adopt, implement and be an inspiration for other regions – that is my wish for Ministers and high-level representatives from the 53 member countries prior to the WHO’s Regional Committee for Europe meeting in Vilnius from 14-17 September.

The Ministers and high-level representatives from the 53 member countries of the Regional Committee for Europe have important topics on their meeting agenda. From ISCA’s perspective the most interesting one is: WHO European Region physical activity strategy 2016-2025.

This is the World Health Organisation’s first regional physical activity strategy and it sends a clear signal that physical activity is seen politically as being of increasing importance. Physical inactivity is a major threat and is unfortunately so widespread that the respected medical journal, The Lancet, described it as a worldwide “Physical Inactivity Pandemic” in 2012.

The first step is to adopt the strategy. That is the easy step. The next step will be to implement it. And even though the member states have the responsibility of adopting the strategy, its implementation is not simply a task for the Ministries – it is task for a multitude of stakeholders, including the civil society organisations that have been advocating for it.

Over 1000 events and counting

Can you help us beat the MOVE Week record?

A total of 1011 MOVE Week events across Europe have now been registered on the moveweek.eu website and the number is growing every day. Ireland has raced to the lead with 145 events, followed by Estonia (112), France (84), Bulgaria (79) and Poland (51). We are still a long way from breaking last year’s record of 5,600 events – but there is also still time to register as a MOVE Agent. Organise an event, big or small, in your community, office, school, club or university and make it count by signing up here. MOVE Week is happening in most European countries from 21-27 September, but please check with your National Coordinator for the dates in your country. And look out for MOVE Week if you are in Latin America - from 19-27 September in Brazil and 20-27 September in Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay.

15 speakers and 8 moderators confirmed for MOVE Congress 2015

Our preliminary programme for the MOVE Congress 2015 has now been updated, and 15 speakers and 8 moderators are now confirmed to present in the sessions from November 5-7 in Copenhagen. The Copenhagen Mayor for Leisure and Culture, Carl Christian Ebbesen, will join ISCA President Mogens Kirkeby, DGI President Søren Møller and Mark Lowther from the University of Cardiff to open the Congress by prompting the delegates to think about why they are doing what they do, what they have to offer, how they need to make it happen and where they can start and gain inspiration from. Michal Rynkowski from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Education and Culture will present updates on the Erasmus+ Sport programme and help follow up last year’s successful fundraising session with an extended workshop on Day 3. Now We Meet the Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport

On the opening day for the first European Week of Sport (7 September), and ISCA and the NowWeMOVE campaign were present to mark the occasion at Square - Brussels Meeting Centre. Just two days before the NowWeBike cycling tour reached the Square in Brussels, it seemed fitting for NowWeBike coordinator and ISCA Youth Officer Nenad Borkovic to present the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics with a map of the NowWeBike route. The occasion also coincided with the start of or the final sprint towards MOVE Week in over 30 European countries, which is supported by the European Week of Sport #BeActive.

NowWeMOVE and World Heart Day partner to promote heart-healthy environments

Opportunities to create heart-healthy environments are all around us – at home, at work and at play. And you can discover them for yourself this September by joining in MOVE Week and World Heart Day. Last year, the NowWeMOVE campaign and the World Heart Federation partnered to celebrate the start of our hallmark events, MOVE Week and World Heart Day, on the same day – 29 September. Our cross-promotion helped contribute to massive increases in participation: double the number for MOVE Week and 35% more for World Heart Day. This year the timing of our events may differ but our cross-sector collaboration will remain the same.
