Renaissance Faire Fast Approaching
Matt Overton has been working hard to organize Bucks Woodturners participation in the Village Renaissance Faire. It will be held on September 19 and 20th from 9am to 6pm, in Wrightstown, PA. If you are not participating, please come out and support our members who are.
Bucks Woodturners will have an area 10 ft x 20 ft for turning demonstrations, as well as a gallery of work for sale by those turners unable to attend or who only have a few items for sale or display. There will also be a table with information on Bucks Woodturners with the intention of recruiting new potential members.
One of the key components for making this event successful is engaging the public: there will be at least 2 lathes, as well as a treadle lathe for demonstrations. Our intent is to make spinning tops and maybe some other toys that the kids can decorate, as well as some pens for giveaways.
Matt would like to thank all of those who have offered to help make this event happen, including those artists currently scheduled to attend: Karen Goeller, Maxine Ernst, Mike Kehs, Nate Favors, Dave Lyle, Sean Kain, Sue Shelly, Joyce McCullough, Derek Weidman, Carol and Mark Hall, Roger Justice, Bob Crowe, Linford Sine, Matt Overton, Ed Ryan, and Tom Gall.
There is still time for others to join in- contact Matt at mofuels@hotmail.com or 215-778-3091.

Pat Kramer put on an outstanding show at our June meeting on traditional Hawaiian bowls, their mysterious origins and types, and how he has come to understand this very important element of Hawaiian history, art and culture. He spoke about the types of wood used, their shape and finish, and how the details of their design contribute to such an outstanding art form. Pat also gave us a demonstration on how he turns these bowls and various tips and tricks he uses to finish them. You can see several examples of Pat's work on the web where you will see how he uses the natural features of the wood in combination with form to create beautiful sculptures. In Traditional Hawaiian Bowls, Pat writes about many of the topics he covered in the meeting- it is a very interesting read and a nice reminder of a great presentation. Mahalo nui loa, Pat!

AAW NEWS: Women in Turning Becomes AAW Committee
Thursday, September 03, 2015
Women in Turning (WIT) has reached AAW committee status! The committee is dedicated to encouraging and assisting women in their pursuit of turning, to sharing ideas and processes to further members’ skills and creativity, and to increasing participation of women in the field of woodturning. The committee members are: Suzanne Kahn, Betty Scarpino, Dixie Biggs, and Jean LeGwin. The chair is AAW Board member Kathleen Duncan.
WIT, as it became known, is a result of an informal gathering of women at the Phoenix symposium. The group saw a need within AAW to attract and retain more women to woodturning.
The committee has already established the Regional Ambassadors Program. The purpose of this program is to meet the needs of women who want more opportunities to network, collaborate, learn and even socialize, with other WIT members. Regional Ambassadors seeks to establish strong links within and between existing local chapters, offer programming and events for WIT members at regional symposia and to assure that all women are aware of and take advantage of the extensive resources and services that the AAW makes available to all of its members.
Women of Bucks Woodturners: Suzanne Kahn is our focal point for this committee. Feel free to contact her with any questions or interest at suzkahn@mac.com.
