GIS Day //

GIS Day at Ohio State is an annual event for students, staff, faculty, and visitors to learn about the power of geovisualization techniques. This year's program features a "Lightning Lecture Lunch" with 10-minute talks on a wide variety of topics related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Speakers include faculty, staff, students, and representatives of government and industry groups. Food and beverages will be provided.

After the talks, exhibitors will be available for a GIS information fair from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. GIS professionals from municipal, academic, and industry organizations will be available to speak with students about possible careers in GIS and the application of geographic technology in real-world scenarios.

TechnoIogy in Urban Planning

Tools of Collaborative Inquiry: Technology for More Intelligent Urban Planning

How has the field of urban planning adapted to rapidly evolving technology? What should the role of technology in the urban planning process be?

Rob Goodspeed, Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, will explore these questions in his CURA lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 20. 

 

Goodspeed was named a Leading Thinker in Urban Planning and Technology by the website Planetizen in 2011. He holds a Ph.D. in urban and regional planning from MIT, an M.C.P. from the University of Maryland, and a B.A. in history from the University of Michigan.


All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.

CURA Travel Grants Recipients Selected

As part of our mission to support student research in urban and regional issues, CURA is pleased to offer support for travel to conferences to graduate students across disciplines and departments at the university. We experienced increased interest in the travel grants this semester after doubling the amount to $1000.

URBAN DATA LAB

CRPLAN 5890 // Autumn 2015, Second Term

This two-day workshop will introduce students to new forms of urban analysis through innovative visualization methods. Professor Carlo Ratti of MIT’s SENSEable City Lab will explore large data sets to develop new ways of understanding complex urban processes, which can range from communication to mobility and energy flows to waste streams. Students will identify existing data and then focus on visualization tools and techniques. This workshop is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Ohio State, and of special interest for those in architecture, landscape architecture, city and regional planning and geography.  CREDIT HOURS:  1
