Please bring a small amount of water from a place that is special to you. We will combine the water as a symbol that our shared faith comes from many different sources.

In-gathering: Water Communion Ceremony
"Notes from the Open Road"
Rev. David Johnson
At our annual in-gathering service, we bring samples of waters representing places and experiences that have nourished and inspired us. Water is a common symbol of passage, transition, and new life. Our one-of-a-kind stories remind us that the fabric of community is given shape, strength, and beauty when the unique strands of our lives are woven together. Be part of this annual celebration! The sermon will build upon the wisdom of Mark Twain: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness. Broad, wholesome, charitable views cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." (Mark Twain, Innocents Abroad)
Share the Plate
Share the Plate Sunday will be September 13 (rather than our usual first-Sunday donation, which avoids the busy Labor Day weekend). The plate collection will be donated to Olde Towne Medical Center (OTMC) on Olde Towne Road. OTMC is a safety net clinic providing preventive care and early intervention services to a vulnerable and disadvantaged population with services to children and their families a priority. Over 5000 patients each year are provided a full range of medical and dental services. Since uninsured patients pay for their services on a sliding scale, based on family income, OTMC can never be self-sufficient. Although OTMC receives financial support from local governments and grants, the agency relies on special events and the support of local organizations, congregations and individuals to provide quality health care to those in need.

Groundbreaking Ceremony
"Memories, Hopes, and Conversations: A Door Set Open"
Rev. David Johnson
A new year begins – marked by the autumn equinox and by rituals in many secular and religious traditions. It’s an opportunity to let go burdens / regrets, and to begin anew. As we break ground for our building-expansion, we shall also be creating new habitations for the mind and heart. What might unfold in the years ahead as we share the good news of our free faith? G.K. Chesterton wrote: “It is a track of feet in the snow, It is a lantern showing a path, It is a door set open.” How might we creatively enter the doorways of opportunity that will open to us?
Building Groundbreaking! Sunday, September 20
Sunday, September 20 will be a big day for WUU—we will break ground for our expansion and renovation as part of both worship services. Bring your shovel, trowel, spoon, or virtual digging implement and join us at worship, ending with a procession outdoors for a brief ceremony and digging. Save the date, September 20 at both the 9:15 am and 11:15 am services.
All are invited to bring their empty backpacks to service THIS SUNDAY! This is the time of year that many return to school or renew their commitment to being part of the School of Life. Don your book satchels and bring them to service for the Wisdom Moment. See you there!
The following dates are in need of a driver(s) to pick students up for the 11:15 am and then drop them off back at PBK after. Please contact Austen austen@wuu.org if you can fill any of these dates: Sept. 27, Oct. 18, Oct. 25, Nov. 1, Nov. 8, Nov. 15. Thanks in advance!
Food For FISH (Our local community food & clothing pantry)
Children are starting back to school again and need cereals for breakfast and after school snacks and peanut butter and jelly for sandwiches. The need continues and the food is greatly appreciated!
Suggestions are: Peanut butter, jelly, boxes of cereal, granola bars
With the growth of our building and community we also have growth in the number of things that are scheduled on the WUU campus and in the buildings. We have a great new tenant in Fahs House, we share our space with Temple Beth El for the High Holy Days, Church of God, Meditation, etc.
Please be sure to check the official calendar at http://wuu.org/events-calendar/ before you schedule an impromptu meeting or come over to look for your misplaced jacket. There have been times when worship services or holy times have been mistakenly interrupted by someone looking for their casserole dish.
If you find your glasses missing or would like to schedule a meeting for your group please contact Ellyn in the office at office@wuu.org or (757) 2200-6830.

Our worship time will remain 10:00am until we switch to two worship service times on Sunday, September 20. See announcement below.

Neighborly Potluck
For the first time in WUU’s history, we are inviting our neighbors to join us for dinner! On Friday, September 25th we will provide a potluck dinner and talk about our building plans so that they can get to know us better—and we can get to know them. Please help welcome those who live near us by bringing a little extra food for the 6:00pm potluck dinner.
Can you help set up and/or clean up afterwards? Contact Jessica O’Brien (newjb2001@hotmail.com) or Pat Hoppe (phoppesing@cox.net).
