Special edition - Defence outcomes

This month we have a special edition of our newsletter to focus solely on the great partnership and student outcomes being created through our Defence partnerships both through the Army First Look program and the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers.  This edition is jam packed with photos, so that you can look out for the familiar, smiling faces of our Tamworth students as they get a taste of career pathways in Defence.

Army First Look

In late August, six Tamworth students set off on a unique experience for Army First Look - an opportunity to travel to Duntroon and experience Army life close up for a few days.  Accompanied by LALC Chairperson, Harry Cutmore, the boys were treated to a tour of the training base, with introductions to personnel from a range of careers within the Army.  And the experience part hadn't even started - the students went on to take part in a range of physical challenges for trainees including an over water obstacle course and physical training regimes, vehicle and flight simulators and even parachute training!

The anticipation was palpable at Tamworth Airport as six Tamworth students prepared to jet off on their big adventure.  And for two of the boys it wasn't just the Army experience ahead of them - it was also their first opportunity to fly.  All of the students were interested in taking the opportunity to see how the Defence force operates, explore their daily routine and facilities and understand more about the day-to-day experience of Army training.  Speaking to young soldiers, checking out the barracks and exploring different career options were also on the wish list.

First things first, once they arrived at Duntroon, the boys were all presented with their official Defence kit and made to feel like one of the "family".

What they said...

Patrick Lyons-Cain - Oxley High School
I attended the Army First Look as I would like to pursue a career as a Rifleman in the Army when I leave school.  The open day was fantastic with so many career options  - you get to experience so much and the Army has many more career paths than I realised. I will now be taking the next step and undertaking a YOU session on 12th September.

Jacob Stanton - Peel High School
My expectations of the Army First Look program were that it was going to be hard and provide a good overview of what life in the Army would be like.  The program definitely lived up to my expectations!  The experience was fun but at the same time serious. I had the opportunity to participate in lots of different activities.  Doing drills really gave me a good idea of what it was going to be like in the Army.  This overall experience has reinforced my desire to pursue a career in the Army.  My YOU session is coming up on Saturday 12 September and I can't wait!

Will Keogh - McCarthy Catholic College
I went to see what it might be like in the Army as I am considering joining when I finish my HSC.  I was worried the weekend might be just sitting in a room listening to people talk but is was the complete opposite. When we got there we had a go at the fitness activities and obstacle courses and even better, we had a go at shooting the infantry guns in a simulator, that was heaps of fun! It was a great experience and has given me a good insight into what the Defence force would be like.  I will definitely be considering joining ADFA as a career option.

Cody Prendergast - Oxley High School
Before going to Canberra I didn't have any particular aspirations to join the Defence Force.  I was interested in having a look at the options on offer though, and that's exactly what we did.  The first day we did an Army entry fitness test, which all of the Tamworth boys passed, and after that we did an indoor obstacle course with objects to climb over, jump on, crawl under and swing off. From there we walked in formation to the Weapons Training Simulator System which was my favourite part of the trip.  We had a tour of the grounds of the Royal Military College and the next day had to wake up at 0600 and have breakfast in the Officer's mess.  My experience really changed my expectations.  I'm still not 100 per cent sure about joining but it really opened my eyes.  There are over 120 careers in the Army and not all involve the typical front line job that you might think about.

Tom Keogh - McCarthy Catholic College
I attended the First Look initiative to look at options for getting a degree at either University or with ADFA.  The experience offered a range of pathways to go into my career of choice at ADFA ranging from entering the Defence force as an infantry man, by doing a trade or by studying at University and becoming an officer.  the open day was fantastic.  I got to see and experience so much of what ADFA has to offer and I really enjoyed speaking with people in the Army.  I am unsure if ADFA is a pathway I will take but it is definitely a very good option that I will have to consider.

Luke Miles - McCarthy Catholic College
I attended Army First Look in Canberra to gain an experience of Army life and see if it might be a career path that I would like to pursue.  My experience in Canberra was good - the staff were welcoming and easy to talk to.  The Army seems like a great career - a little strict and challenging at times - but overall my experience was good.   My choice of career is a mechanic and  I found out what is required if I want to pursue that career in the Army - and it is an option I will consider.  We had great fun in the evening and talked about where everyone came from and what career paths we may follow - my biggest struggle was getting up at 6am!

Harry Cutmore - TLALC Chairperson
The Army First Look was a good look!  The ADFA open day was fantastic offering so many career options - I can see real benefit for our kids -  a great career path and way of life.  We have invited our local Australian Army Unit 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers to give a presentation to our next [LALC] members meeting on 7 October, 2015 so our community can see the great pathways that an Army career can offer.

Taking the next step

On Saturday 12 September, two of our Opportunity Hub Year 12 students, Patrick Lyons-Cain (Oxley) and Jacob Stanton (Peel) participated in an Army YOU session at Beersheba Barracks. Both boys performed exceptionally well, receiving results reflecting a wide variety of career choices ranging from administrative to combat roles, and even the role of pilot! Neither had expected the sheer variety of career options they obtained, and they are over the moon at their individual performances. We're all so proud of you and wish you both all the very best on the next steps of your endeavours!

WHAT IS INDIGENOUS YOU RECRUITING?
After submitting an application to join the Army, the YOU session is the next step in the recruitment process, and is designed to ensure that the Army is really the right path.  It also includes aptitude, medical and careers assessments and feedback.  The Indigenous Group YOU Session at the Beersheba Barracks Tamworth on Saturday 12 Sep 2015 was coordinated by Parramatta's Specialist Recruiting Team - Indigenous.

The YOU Session is intended to provide:
• An initial indication as to personal suitability for a position in the ADF;
• An indication of the positions and job options within the ADF that may suit;
• An opportunity to gain a better understanding of the standard conditions of ADF
service.

12th/16th HRL partnership formalised

Our local partnership with the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers has now been formalised, bringing a range of local opportunities for students who wish to follow a career through the Army.  A joint recruitment plan has been finalised and signed off by 12th/16th HRL Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel King on 1 September.  The plan sets out the steps by which the 12th/16th HRL will provide employment opportunities to Aboriginal people in Tamworth through the Opportunity Hub.  Community education showcasing the range of options available will commence through High School presentations scheduled for Term 4.  A pre-recruitment course designed and targeted for Aboriginal community members will also be rolled out.

I just wanted to send you a quick email and thank you for all the assistance you are providing my children through the Opportunity Hub.  As boys heading into Year 12 and beyond it is great that they are receiving support, advice, motivation and opportunities to enable them to stay focused on their studies and make informed decisions about their future.  We believe that anything is possible so long as you have choices.

The Opportunity Hub staff are doing a great job in opening so many opportunities up to the boys, giving them a much broader view on where they can go, what they can do and what they can achieve.  Whether it be higher education, joining the workforce or being proud of their culture, it has certainly inspired Will & Tom to aim high, not only do they want to be successful but also be future leaders and mentors to younger children as the staff have mentored them.
