DFCM Releases New 2015-2020 Strategic Plan
The Department of Family and Community Medicine is excited to present our 2015-2020 strategic plan, Advancing Family Medicine Globally through Scholarship, Social Responsibility and Strategic Partnerships.
This plan has been over a year in the making: both internal and external stakeholders were consulted to develop the goals and action items laid out within it. We reflected on both our achievements and what we need to do to move DFCM – and the discipline of family medicine – forward.
“This plan builds on the many successes of the previous five years while turning attention to the areas where DFCM needs to grow the most,” says Chair of DFCM, Dr. Lynn Wilson. “It provides a roadmap for our faculty, staff, students and supporters that is ambitious but also achievable through our collective efforts.”
Through extensive consultation, the following five strategic directions were determined:
- Develop strategic partnerships to improve health and family medicine scholarship
- Increase our impact on health through education, clinical and health services research
- Advance quality primary care through scholarship and innovation across all of our education endeavours
- Enhance health services through quality improvement and health system integration
- Promote engagement and leadership in our faculty and staff

Using Blood Tests to Detect Lung Cancer: Study by DFCM Faculty Member
Early results from the largest ever randomised trial for lung cancer detection using blood test is giving researchers hope that lung cancer’s treatment rates can change, says Professor Frank Sullivan, Chief Investigator of the study and the Director of UTOPIAN, DFCM’s practice-based research network.

Dr. Nicole Woods joins Office of Education Scholarship
We are excited to welcome Dr. Nicole (Nikki) Woods to the Office of Education Scholarship as the new Education Evaluation Scientist. Dr. Woods will serve as a resource to advance education scholarship within DFCM. Her specific areas of focus will be evaluation of research and scholarly projects related to clinical reasoning, expertise development and principles of teaching and learning.
Dr. Woods is the Director of the Centre for Ambulatory Care Education at Women’s College Hospital and is an Assistant Professor and former Director of Education Evaluation in the Department of Surgery.

The 2016 DFCM Conference will be held on April 21st and 22nd at a new location: the Allstream Centre in downtown Toronto.

Dr. Marcus Law was appointed Director, Preclerkship Renewal with the Faculty of Medicine.
Drs. Steven Friedman, Chase McMurren and James Downar have received 2015 Wightman-Berris Teaching Awards for excellence in Undergraduate Medical Education.
Dr. Dov Soberman was awarded a Special Commendation in Integrated Medical Education Teaching from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
The St. Joseph's Health Centre Family Medicine Centre/Urban Family Health Team has won an OCFP Family Practice of the Year Award.
Dr. Pauline Pariser and the Seamless Care Optimizing the Patient Experience (SCOPE) team were awarded the University Health Network Local Impact Award.
Drs. Mahan Kulasegaram and Sarah Wright have received AMS Phoenix Project Grants.
Heather Sampson received the Anderson Award for Program Innovation and Development.

Ectopic Pregnancy EM
