4th offering of the Advanced Biofuels Course kicks off!

The 4th offering of the Advanced Biofuels Course (ABC) is well on its way and we’re pleased to announce that it’s full to capacity again with 40 participants!

Here is the introduction video for the ABC, which explains the course contents and structure. Meet our new TA, Mary Charushi, who is a chemical process engineer and graduate of the University of Manitoba. She was a BFN HQP from 2013-2015, and previously took the ABC.
HQP: We have the resources you need!

If you're a BFN HQP, we have many resources for you that you should be using, whether you're travelling, presenting, planning a meeting or in need of new skills. We can help!
  • Are attending a conference, workshop or event? Apply for an HQP Travel Award to have your expenses reimbursed.
  • Would you like to go to visit another lab and learn new skills? Apply for an HQP Exchange Award. You could be eligible for up to $4200 in reimbursements for expenses.
  • Would you like to organize a meeting? See our Networking Fund Policy

Report of the Advanced Biofuels Symposium now available

Curious to know what we discussed at the last Advanced Biofuels Symposium? Check out our conference report, which concisely summarizes what BFN organized for 3 intense days of workshops, meetings and sessions! See it here.
BioFuelNet's Dr. Abatzoglou featured in Asia Pacific Biotech News Magazine

Dr. Nicolas Abatzoglou, professor at Université de Sherbrooke and BFN Conversion Theme Leader, was recently featured in Asia Pacific Biotech News Magazine. Abatzoglou has at the heart of his mission the creation of a better catalyst. How did he do it? Find out when you read the full story here
Have you seen these videos?

BFN's been releasing cool videos all summer. Have you seen them? If you were on vacation and missed them, here they are!

What's the difference between biofuels and fossil fuels?
Dr. Donald Smith, Scientific Director of BioFuelNet Canada, explains the difference between biofuels and fossil fuels, in terms of carbon cycling. Both produce CO2 when burned, but how are they different?

Advanced Biofuels Symposium 2015 highlights
BioFuelNet Canada organized the Advanced Biofuels Symposium with the theme ''Advanced biofuels in a Shifting Energy landscape''. It was held in Montreal on July 22-24th 2015.

Improv for BFN Scientists
See Marc Rowland, Montreal Improv Theatre director, lead BFN HQP (grad students and post-docs), through a series of improv exercises as a way of improving communication.

BFN asks Montreal about biofuels
BioFuelNet  goes out on the streets of Montreal to ask people what they know about biofuels.
Biojet activities

On Sept. 22, BFN’s Aviation Task Force will be holding a workshop at Montreal’s Hotel Bonaventure. The first half of the workshop will cover strategy for executing a large-scale biojet initiative at a Canadian airport by 2017. The second half will focus on biojet fuel research, including a summary of current research and a roundtable discussion of anticipated research priorities for 2017-2022. The agenda can be downloaded here. If you wish to attend, please contact Yashar Afarin at afarin@mie.utoronto.ca.

On Sept. 21, 2015 BFN hosted an introductory course on biojet fuel in Montreal, right before the Sustainability 2015 conference of the American Helicopter Society. Leading biojet fuel experts from Canada, the US and the Netherlands described the primary drivers behind the emergence of biojet fuel, the process for certifying new fuels, and key commercial experiences in this field over the past decade with a view to the future.
Seeking a representative for BFN's HQP Commitee

If you want to influence BFN and shape our training activities, now is the time! BFN is seeking a HQP representative to join our HQP Committee. The Committee meets once every few months (members outside of Montreal can call in) to discuss progress on BioFuelNet's HQP training program and events. Application deadline: October 15th, 2015

Interested candidates (BFN HQP only) can apply here.
See the BFN renewal survey results

The results of last month's survey on our new Phase II are available here. BFN was funded for 5 years (2012-2017), and our renewal documents are due in less than year (click here for more information on the renewal). To help get us started, we had requested input on our new Phase II structure.
Help us all by spreading the word about BFN

If you're a researcher or a HQP who is funded by BFN, please make sure to mention us whenever you are speaking about your research, whether it be with other scientists, government, industry, and especially when speaking with media. A few general guidelines:
  • Please include BFN's logo in your presentations and posters, and mention your research is funded by BFN.
  • If you are speaking to media about your research, explain what is BFN and its importance in supporting and coordinating advanced biofuels research in Canada.
  • If you are planning any graphic design using BFN's name and logo, please see the BFN branding guidelines, and contact us.
The more we spread the word, the more advanced biofuels will get the attention they deserve!
New collaborations for BFN!

BFN has just signed an MoU with Meawall Inc. in order to collaborate on an online platform that will allow BFN HQP to network and connect directly with businesses and employers.

In July, BFN signed two MOUs, signaling further collaborative opportunities with organizations involved with the bioeconomy: Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC) and Green Centre Canada (GCC).

BFN is also proud to announce that Fedinco has agreed to join the BFN Investment Network and to spearhead the creation of  a sustainable ecosystem for investment in the bioeconomy.
