Paying it forward

This past week I had the opportunity to speak with an extremely successful CTO at a company out in California. I connected with him because he knows my brother, and he agreed to hop on a Skype call for an hour to let me pick his brain. He works in an industry I am getting into, so I figured he would have a lot to say.

I could, and probably will, write in-depth about the actual experience of speaking with him, the differing perspectives, knowledge, and ideas. But today I'm focusing on a different side of the story, the fact that I actually had the opportunity to speak with him. He usually charges hundreds of dollars an hour to consult with people on the side, but because he knew my brother he was willing to chat with me. For him, I'm sure it was just another conversation about business. It's something he enjoys, and he's happy to help out his friends little brother. For me, this conversation meant, for lack of a better word, a lot. Every time someone I respect or look up to is willing to give me some of their time it means a ton.

I wouldn't be where I am today without the people who have been willing to do that. Anyone who I've ever grabbed coffee with, or met in a meeting, or simply answered an email has had an impact on my trajectory and growth. Giving back and paying it forward is a vital part of helping the next generation grow.

This is something I'm trying to do right from the start. This newsletter is a part of that. Sharing what I have learned, no matter how small the amount, is just one way I'm trying to help. I'm trying to find other ways through volunteering, donating, and helping through other avenues.

The sooner you can focus on giving back, in whatever way works best for you, will not only provide ample benefits in your life but will show the next generation the correct example, as the generation before us has done. It's a cycle that must repeat itself, without fail.

So there are two things I want you to focus on this week.

  1. Think about the people who have paid it forward for your benefit. Anyone who has helped you along the way. Thank them. All it requires is a quick email, call, or note to say thanks.
  2. Start paying it forward. Find a way to help out, or mentor someone. This looks different for different people, but there is always a way you can do it.

More good stuff

This is overdue, but I want you all to check out my dude Curt Pittman's video work on YouTube. He is a good friend and is quickly becoming a top notch video producer. He uses drones and GoPros to their full ability, not to mention the great choice of tunes and high production value on his videos. My personal favorite right now is his most recent video from a sailing trip to Greece. Show him some love with some likes, comments, and a subscription to his channel if you dig his stuff.

Happy Labor Day weekend folks! Short week coming up so make the most of it and remember to pay it forward.

Cheers!
