September 2015

Hi from the team at Microcab. We’ve been operating in the ‘green’ space for some years now and I do notice a growing feeling of traction, of real change, in both the mobility and energy sectors. There is a sense of scale coming to bear on what has, at times, seemed like a minority activity.  We see bigger players, both individual and corporate, with visionary approaches and large scale ambitions demonstrating how this sustainable future could materialise. The once fringe eco sector is going mainstream.

FILMING WITH THE BBC

Roger Harrabin, BBC environment analyst with John Jostins, filming for the Breakfast News on 24th March.

The piece is about renewable energy and energy storage. The Microcab H2EV fuel cell vehicle is featured as it uses hydrogen gas as a fuel. Hydrogen can be produced from water using excess solar or wind energy, storing off the peaks in production. This is a low carbon option for producing hydrogen. In the vehicle, the fuel cell converts the hydrogen back to water whilst generating electricity for motive power.

Microcab filming with the BBC

The SWARM project continues, bringing together 3 fuel cell vehicle manufacturers across 3 regions of Europe.

The European FCH JU funded project SWARM (“Demonstration of Small 4-Wheel fuel cell passenger vehicle Applications in Regional and Municipal transport”) will establish a large demonstration fleet of small passenger vehicles that builds on and expands existing hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

The vehicles will be low-cost, high fuel-efficiency, hybridised, light-weight passenger cars for city and regional transport.

Each of these regions will deploy a hydrogen refuelling site to close the gaps in a continuous ‘hydrogen highway’ that leads from Scotland via the Midlands to London, connecting to Brussels and on to Cologne and Hamburg/Scandinavia/Berlin via Bremen.

FUEL CELL RECOVERY PROJECT

Microcab is lead partner on the Innovate UK funded, collaborative Fuel Cell Recovery project - running to mid-2016.

This 2-year project aims to establish how Hydrogen Fuel Cell (HFC) systems in Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) can be recovered once they reach the end of their life and kept in circulation to ensure sustainability.

This will encourage FCEV supply chains to become more circular and lead to:

  • savings in CO2 emissions through reusing parts and materials
  • a reduction in waste going to landfill
  • the conservation of precious metals such as platinum inside a closed loop value stream
  • the opening up of the aftermarket of hydrogen fuel cell elecric vehicles (FCEVs) which can be recovered once they reach the end of their life and kept in circulation to ensure sustainability.

Fuel cell car fleets

At the margins of Hydrogen London Transport event on 10th March, Microcab Industries signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Italian startup Cinque International, aiming at setting up deployment schemes for fuel cell car fleets in urban areas across the Mediterranean region.

Design

Edward Freeth joined Microcab in October 2014 with an Automotive Design degree from Coventry University. As well as designing a refreshed interior for the H2EV, Edward is currently working on a new vehicle design, code-named HyLite to be launched in 2015.

Microcab’s Green Machine Could Change Face of City Deliveries
Summer in the city can be pretty dismal given the high levels of pollution in the air from vehicle emissions. However, there is a solution in development, with a new, light, delivery van that is not only aiming to be more lung-friendly, but also wants to make use of food waste.
