ELECTION SEASON

Volunteer for Back-to-
School Nights 2015

This week: Thursday, September 24
Remaining dates: 9/29, 9/30, 10/1, 10/8

We’re in the home stretch for Back-to-School Nights. Volunteers are needed to greet parents and offer them literature about the Democratic candidates running for election this November. Our presence at the schools is important in this off year when many are not aware that there are elections. Please check the schedule for available slots.

Absentee-in-Person Voting at Franconia Governmental Center

Saturdays, September 26-October 31,
9 am-5 pm
Monday-Friday, October 13-30, 3:30-7 pm

Franconia Governmental Center
6121 Franconia Road, Alexandria, VA 22310

Volunteers are needed at absentee-in-person voting to hand out Democratic sample ballots for the November elections. The sample ballot is important in this local election year when there are many names on the ballot, including our Democrat-endorsed candidates who will not have a “D” next to their names on the ballot.

Canvass for Senator George L. Barker

Saturday, September 26, 11 am and 1 pm
Landsdowne Campaign HQ

6452 Landsdowne Centre Drive

Senator George L. Barker needs help canvassing the district this Saturday, September 26. George won the past two races by small margins, and we are expecting this race to be just as close. We need all the help we can get to mobilize our neighbors so we can make sure we keep his seat and take back the Senate in November. Our team will be out knocking doors all weekend, with shifts starting at 11 am and 1 pm. We hope to have you join us. Meet at the Landsdownecampaign office.

To volunteer, please contact Nathan Steele at nate@reelectsenatorbarker.com or (607) 227-5453.

Board of Supervisors Moving Forward on
Title Lender and Dog Tethering Restrictions

Fairfax County has been working on a pair of ordinance additions and tweaks to help residents and furry friends alike. The first—which will restrict the ability for title lending businesses to open in the County—creates new standards and restraints on these predatory businesses. Importantly to Lee District, this change would allow us to keep title lenders out of revitalization areas, such as Richmond Highway and Springfield.

Additionally, the Board is seeking to prohibit tethering (tying animals outside unattended), to protect our animals from abuse. This is especially important now that the weather will soon be worsening.

Both ordinances, which come at the request of Supervisor Jeff McKay, will be taken up by the Board on Tuesday. Public hearings will be advertised for November 17 and October 20, respectively, and it’s important that you weigh in. Please contact Supervisor McKay’s office or the Clerk to the Board with your comments. The full text of the items can also be found here.
