Denton VOTER October 2015

President's Podium by Sue Smith

We had outstanding speakers at our September general meeting at Barley and Board with lively follow-up questions. September was also a busy month for Julie Leuzinger, Community Relations VP.

Julie organized Constitution Day at UNT on September 17 with speakers presenting both sides of marriage equality and religious freedom. Robbie Sittel also assisted in the event and I helped distribute pocket-sized constitutions to those attending. Then Julie and Robbie helped set up voter registration at Kerr Hall and Rawlins Hall on September 22, National Voter Registration Day. The Denton Record-Chronicle had excellent coverage on the front page of the paper.

At the October 15 meeting, 7:00 PM, at Denton Senior Center, Jim Alexander will talk through the proposed Constitutional Amendments. He can translate the wording into regular English better than anyone. We have ordered the state Voters Guide/Guía de Votantes and should have them available before the meeting. If you would like to help distribute them throughout the county, please let me know.

LWV Denton September Reports

National Voter Registration Day A Huge Success

National Voter Registration Day (Tuesday, September 22, 2015) was a huge success this year! Denton League of Women Voters board members Laurel Crawford (Director of the Board), Julie Leuzinger (VP of Community Relations), and Robbie Sittel (Secretary) registered students from 10am to 2pm on the University of North Texas campus in Kerr Hall and from 6pm-8pm in Rawlings Hall. Our efforts made the front page of the Denton Record-Chronicle where students were asked by newspaper representatives why they felt it was important to register to vote and what issues mattered most to them. The Denton League of Women Voters board feels that the registration drive provides a valuable service to our campus population and removes another barrier for students to become civically involved on a local level.

We finished the day with 238 registered (168 of them were newly registered voters). We will be back on campus again the last two weeks of January 2016 to register voters prior to the deadline for the Presidential Primary election on March 1, 2016.

The board would like to say thank you to three friends of the League who volunteered to help, Bethany Blackstone, Doug Campbell, and Jesse Hamner. We could not have been so successful without their support!

September 24th Meeting

The September 24 meeting with Bobbie Mitchell, Denton County Commissioner, Precinct 3 and Charles Emery, the Chairman of the Board for the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) brought about lively conversation regarding Denton County and Dallas Fort Worth. Andy Eads, Denton County Commissioner, Precinct 4 was not able to attend the meeting. The meeting was held at Barley & Board on the city of Denton Square.

Mr. Emery is on the Regional Transportation Council and the Dallas Regional Mobility Coalition, both a part of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (North Central Texas COG). Mr. Emery stated that there was always a conflict between mobility and air quality. Please see the following link for the publication A Regional Approach to Sustainable Development (Feb 2015) http://www.nctcog.org/trans/outreach/rmi/ and other pertinent articles.

Ms. Mitchell brought issues pertaining to Denton County and Dallas Ft Worth. Bobbie is on the Executive Board of the North Central Texas COG and has been the Mayor of Lewisville from 1993 to 2000. As stated in the Strategic Plan the North Central Texas Council of Governments describes itself, "We are an association of, for and by local governments. We assist our members in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and recognizing regional opportunities for improving the quality of life in North Central Texas." Please see the following link for the North Central Texas Strategic Plan for 2015-2020 http://www.nctcog.org/aa/jobs/edo/stratplan/index.asp.
