Tim "Mr. History" Hoogland wowed our teachers in early August!
NHDC Teacher Trainings

NHDC held its fourth annual teacher training on August 6th and 7th at the History Colorado Center. Sponsored by the museum, Colorado Council for Social Studies and Library of Congress—Teaching with Primary Sources at MSU Denver and the CELL, the event attracted fifty educators from across the state. Break-out sessions featured History Colorado and TPS-MSU staff, as well as State Historian Bill Convery, Coordinator for Minnesota History Day Tim “Mr. History” Hoogland, Chair of and Professor in The History Department at Adams State University Ed Crowther, and several History Day veteran teachers including Ed Glassman, Barbara Allen, Casey Clay, and Bonnie Guggenheim. Topics ranged from exploring the Library of Congress site for sources, this year’s theme (Explorations, Encounters, and Exchange), possible topic ideas, and the brand new 4th and 5th Grade Elementary Poster Contest. The event once again proved to be a huge success!

NHDC held another teacher training on September 17th and 18th, hosted at History Colorado. The event, sponsored by History Colorado Center, TPS-MSU, the CELL, Aurora History Museum, and Aurora Public Schools, was aimed specifically at our newest region in Aurora!

On October 5th and 6th NHDC will be in southwestern Colorado for a collaborative teacher workshop. Click here to register now.

Research Rendezvous--Back by Popular Demand!

After a huge turnout of more than 300 students at the Research Rendezvous events this past winter, NHDC is excited to announce the expansion of our research events. Students will be able to consult with librarians and experts to hone their research skills and find unique sources at our three library events on:

November 8th at the Denver Public Library, Central Branch
November 10th  at the Boulder Public Library, Main Building (1001 Arapahoe)
January 23rd at UNC Michener Library

Additionally, NHDC is excited to offer a Maker’s Workshop in partnership with History Colorado, where students participating in the exhibit category will have the opportunity to work with the exhibit design staff at History Colorado. That event will take place on January 23rd at History Colorado.

NHDC will also be holding a research event at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, the details of which are still to be determined.

Student Spotlight: Tye Brown-Wolf

Tye Brown-Wolf, a sophomore at the Peak School in Silverthorne, has participated in NHDC since sixth grade and competed as a national finalist this past June in College Park, Maryland with his paper “Sigmund Freud: Father of Psychoanalysis or Psychotic Leader?” Tye competed in the exhibit category his first two years before finding his niche in the paper category. Though Tye enjoyed all aspects of nationals experience he says that his favorite part was “just being around fellow students who are incredibly bright and have a similar commitment to their academics. I was able to have valuable and in-depth conversations with almost everyone I met at competition.”

In addition to participating in NHDC, Tye plays three sports, participates on the debate team, builds community garden beds, and serves his high school in various capacities. Tye also started a charity for an orphanage in the Bahamas with his sisters, interned with a local city commissioner, and has already taken two college classes. Tye has a bright future, and we are proud of all his accomplishments!

Teacher Feature:
Lyssa Duncan

Three years ago, Lyssa Duncan of Aspen Middle School began implementing National History Day in Colorado into her classroom. She remembers that the theme that year was Turning Points in History, commenting, “I’m sure all history day teacher’s remember their first.” This year Lyssa had a student qualify for nationals for the first time when Chloe Brettman won the state competition with her website on Rachel Carson. Brettman also got to introduce one of the only living people that worked with Carson at the 2015 Aspen Center for Environmental Studies benefit as the guest of honor.

Lyssa believes in the NHDC program because “students that will turn nothing into me during the school year get excited about our school and regional competition.” She also credits some of her success to her language arts team, Hallie Harrison and Adam Flatt, who have been with Duncan every step of the way to help “kids develop strong thesis statements, organization, and the power of being concise.” Despite her successes, Lyssa is always striving to improve her History Day instruction saying, “I still have a long way to go with NHDC in my classroom, each year I feel I learn something new to help my students be successful.”

2016 Theme: Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History

The theme for the upcoming year is Exploration, Encounter, Exchange in History! Students can address one or more aspects of the theme, allowing for a plethora of topics ranging from the explorations of Pizarro, Cortes, and Columbus, to the world’s first encounters with atomic warfare during WWII, to how the exchange of deadly epidemic diseases led to the development of vaccinations. Students are encouraged to be creating in their own exploration of the theme.

The 4th and 5th Grade Poster Contest

NHDC is launching its newest program in an attempt to expand its K-12 outreach. The 4th and 5th Grade Poster contest is open to students across the state, and will focus on the 2016-2017 theme, Taking a Stand in History. The poster contest will essentially be a scaled-down version of the middle and high school exhibit category, and is designed to acquaint upper-elementary school students to History Day through thesis-writing, research, and primary sources. Projects must be on a Colorado topic, and winners of in-school contests will be displayed at museums and locations across the state on Colorado Day, August 1st of each year to kick-off our year. Find more detailed information here! You can also contact Kayla Gabehart at  kayla.gabehart@ucdenver.edu for registration information and more details.
Cultural Partner Spotlight: The CELL

One of This month’s featured cultural partner is also our newest partner. The CELL (Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab) is a non-profit, non-partisan institution dedicated to enhancing students’ knowledge on the understanding of global security and prevention of terrorism. The CELL offers experiential education activities for students in subjects such as civics, history, ethics, law, criminal justice, and homeland security. Free lesson plans that meet state and core standards are available as well. Click here to learn more about the CELL’s resources for educators.

NHDC wants to welcome The CELL as a cultural partner and thank them for sponsoring our reception following the teacher
training on August 6th!

Patrick Slowey: Proving that NHD is an Experience and "More Than a Day"

Patrick Slowey, an educator at Steamboat Springs High School, had the honor of attending an NHD Sacrifice for Freedom event for the second year in a row. In July of 2014, Slowey attended the Albert H. Small Teacher and Student Institute in Normandy, France after his student, Margaret Lichtenfels, was selected through an international application process. For that trip, Margaret researched a local fallen hero laid to rest in the American Cemetery at Normandy and gave his eulogy at a remembrance ceremony.

This year, Patrick attended a Sacrifice for Freedom Event sponsored by the America Battle Monuments Commission. On this trip, Slowey and a number of other teachers visited six American cemeteries throughout Europe and had to research and eulogize their own fallen hero. Slowey researched First Lieutenant Warren Frye who lost his life during Operation  Market-Garden in Holland. About his experience he says, “this partnership has given me the opportunity of a lifetime, not just to travel but to research, understand, and preserve the life of a young man who sacrificed his life in the service of his country.”
