The Voice of Volunteering

From the CEO

It has been a pleasure and a delight to travel around the State meeting and recognising volunteers nominated for the 2015 NSW Volunteer of the Year Awards. The work you do on a voluntary basis is inspiring and humbling. It's a pleasure to highlight it with Local MP's, stakeholders and media. Being just over halfway through the regional ceremonies we are now looking towards the State ceremony to be held on Friday 4 December 2015 to coincide with International Volunteer Day (December 5). Keep up to date with the regional ceremonies on our website.

People generally understand that starting a presentation with both a smile and an engaging introduction is a good way to get – and maintain – audience attention. They get it.

But do we practice the same principles with a different kind of audience – at meetings? Many meetings are launched with “Right, let’s get started.” Or there’s “OK, first up, where are we with….”  Or my favourite, “Where’s John?! It would be great to start on time just for once…!”

October Networking Event

Legal issues in defining a volunteer and other unpaid work

Our sector faces specific issues with dealing with managing volunteers and unpaid work.  This session will look at the legal issues in defining a volunteer and other unpaid work such as internships, work-for-the-dole, and work experience, and the importance of getting the volunteer relationship right.

There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and individual discussion after the workshop. This is an important presentation for anyone committed to best practice in managing their volunteers and other unpaid workers.

Presenter: Savi Manii, Manager, Advice (NSW) | Not-for-profit Law, Justice Connect
