Announcing the inaugural Westwood Lake Triathlon

JUNE 26, 2016
Westwood Lake Triathlon

Half Iron, Olympic and Sprint

Dynamic Race Events and the City of Nanaimo, in conjunction with Tourism Nanaimo are pleased to announce that the 1st Annual Westwood Lake Triathlon will be held in Nanaimo at Westwood Lake Park on Sunday June 26, 2016.  This event is expected to draw triathletes, from beginner to professionals, from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, to test their fitness on the challenging course.

The Westwood Lake Triathlon will offer athletes the choice of three distances; a Sprint course, Olympic course and Half Iron distance.

Westwood Lake is an ideal setting for a triathlon event, having been the venue for triathlon for the BC Summer Games in 2014, as well as being the lake that many of the city’s triathletes use for their open water swims.  The bike course for the Olympic and Half Iron will be a challenging one, with some good climbs and quick descents, with the majority of the run course taking place around the scenic Westwood Lake Trail.

The addition of the Westwood Lake Triathlon to the 2016 race calendar will give athletes hungry for more race options an alternative north of the Cowichan Valley for an open water triathlon that is locally owned and produced and keeps the island feel, while still delivering the full experience that our athletes are used to receiving.  We feel the date and course is a perfect test for those planning to race IMC in Whistler at the end of July.

This event has the support of both the City of Nanaimo and Tourism Nanaimo.

“The Nanaimo Parks and Recreation Commission is pleased to give support to the Dynamic Race Events proposal for a triathlon to be held at Westwood Lake on June 26, 2016.” Ian Thorpe, City Councillor and Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission said, “Westwood Lake is a perfect location for a triathlon, and the organizers have a great deal of experience staging similar events.  It should prove to be an exciting addition to Nanaimo’s sports scene, and a real benefit to local sports tourism.  We look forward to giving our continued support and cooperation.”

Lesley Anderson, Executive Director for Tourism Nanaimo added “We’re very excited to welcome this new event to Nanaimo in 2016.  These types of events contribute to community sport and athlete development.  They are also critical to tourism’s success by giving visitors a reason to come, stay, and to return year after year”.

NEW CULTUS LAKE TRIATHLON ADDED

Dynamic Race Events will also be adding an early season open water triathlon to the 2016 race calendar.

We will open our 2016 season in our tried and true venue, Cultus Lake, on Sunday May 29, 2016, making it the first open water triathlon on the calendar in the lower mainland.  We are equally as excited to announce that we will also close out our 2016 season on Sunday September 11th, with the 10th Annual Cultus Lake Triathlon, offering the usual sprint and Olympic distances an adding a Half Iron distance on the same day, making it the last half distance event on the B.C. calendar.

Bonnie Bryant, Director of Parks Operations, said “Cultus Lake Park (CLP) Board and staff are very pleased to announce that Dynamic Race Events will be adding a second triathlon event in our beautiful park on May 29, 2016. CLP has had a strong and successful working relationship with Dynamic Race Events over the last nine years and we welcome the opportunity to add an additional triathlon event in May. On behalf of the CLP Board and staff we wish the volunteers, participants and race coordinators all the very best."

We hope to see you in Cultus next year.... twice!

Cultus Lake Triathlon - September 13th

First off, a huge congratulations to all the athletes who came to Cultus Lake to race.  I hope that you had a great day out on the course.  Thank you for racing with us and for your continued support.

The weather was perfect for racing at 21 degrees on race morning and a wetsuit swim.  The race started at 8 am with the first of two sprint waves followed by the third and final wave of Olympic distance athletes.

We had a number of first timers this year for the sprint race where two thirds of our field were woman.  A congratulations to Suzanne Wilkinson of Victoria who has raced each of the past 9 years at Cultus Lake.

It was exciting to have such a great day of racing and see so many first-time triathletes out on the course enjoying the day! We had our first finish line marriage proposal!  She was very surprised, and she said yes.

We would like to thank the following people:
  • Our race crew for their incredible help and support.  Without them we wouldn't be able to put together a successful race and for that we thank them.  A HUGE thank you to Michelle, Dave, Oliver, Michael and Kyle for all of their hard work on race weekend.
  • All of the amazing volunteers from race weekend.  Some were locals and others were athletes not racing or spouses and family members of athletes.
  • The local lifeguard team for their continued support of the race.
  • The local paddle board group from Pure Life Paddle Boards that came out to offer tremendous water support this year.
  • Grace Cho, Grace comes out to Oliver and Cultus Lake every year to kayak!
  • Karl Cantner for bringing out hit drone, securing permits and shooting the race starts and swim course this year.  We hope to have the video posted on the race website shortly.
  • Fraser & Gerri Hagel who live at the first house on the start of the run course.  Fraser was also out on the swim course again this year in his zodiac with two lifeguards race morning.

Congratulations to our 2015 Cultus Lake Champions

The weather couldn’t have been better on Sunday, Sept 13, 2015. With the sun coming up and the water a perfect temperature, the experience of the race was already bringing a smile to all.  Plus, how many races per year do you get to sleep in your own bed?

After some last minute instructions, Joe started the race with the air horn and all thoughts were gone. No worries just focus, breathe, stroke, breathe, stroke. JUST KEEP SWIMMING, JUST KEEP SWIMMING!!! With the lead out paddle boarder and amazing water conditions, the swim was well marked and raced. There are not too many swim courses where your family and friends can stand on a dock and pick you out while you swim by.

The transition was great and the cheering and excitement from spectators was growing.  The bike course has a 1km hill to start and finish with some fast flats in the middle. These flats didn’t seem so flat that day thanks to a wind coming west to east, head down. JUST KEEP PEDALLING, JUST KEEP PEDALLING!!! Coming in off the bike it’s nice to finish with one last downhill, nothing like going from  moving 70 km/ HR to running 16 km/ HR. It just feels so slow in comparison.

Onto the run course the weather was perfect.  The new run route made the race even better. With a great support crew and seeing so many athletes smiling and giving all they had, it gave me a lot of great energy and focus during the 10 km run. JUST KEEP STRIDING, JUST KEEP STRIDING!!! Coming to the finish line in first place was great but the best part of the day for me was seeing the FIT CLUB athletes I coach accomplish all their goals and my family’s happy smiles (I think because I was finished a bit faster than my usual Ironman race).

The Dynamic Race Events 2015 Cultus Lake Triathlon was a great day for me as a racer, coach and dad.  I can’t wait until next year to have the experience again.

HALF IRON RACE ADDED

We are excited to announce that the 10th anniversary Cultus Lake triathlon will also include a Half Iron distance race as well next year.

Half Iron course maps coming soon.
On the evening of September 26th, Triathlon BC will host its annual Athlete Gala and Silent Auction. This event will take place at 7:00pm at the Creekside Community Centre, and celebrates the achievements and dedication of our members; current and past athletes, race directors, coaches, officials, clubs, volunteers and supporters - significant individuals who help weave  the fabric of the triathlon community throughout the province.

Guest Speaker is
Melanie McQuaid, three-time Xterra World Champion, multi-time winning 70.3 athlete (including a dominating performance at the 2014 Ballarat Triathlon, with the fastest swim/bike!) and one of Triathlon Magazine's "Top 50 Most Important People to Influence Triathlon In Canada!"

On behalf of Angie and myself we would like to thank those athletes that were able to join us in in Oliver or Cultus Lake this year.

We look forward to seeing many of you next year whether it be at one of our races or at the start line at one of the many local events out there.

We have already started work on our 2016 races and plan on making some more great announcements in our upcoming newsletters over the next few months.

All the best to you in your off season training!  We are finishing up our training as both of us will be at the start line at Ironman Arizona in November.  It will be Angie's first Ironman and my first since 2006.

All the best and see you at the races,

Joe & Angie
