The 2015 inaugural Victorian Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation Lecture - October 6
Keynote speaker – The Hon. Mary-Jane Ierodiaconou, Associate Justice, Supreme Court of Victoria
5:45 for a
6:00 PM start, Monash University Law Chambers
Background to the lecture
The Tristan Jepson Memorial Foundation was created in memory of Tristan, a former University of NSW law student, young lawyer and comedian. Tristan suffered from severe clinical depression and took his own life, just four weeks after his 26th birthday, on the 28 October 2004. The Foundation exists in memory of Tristan’s love of life, his passion for the law and social justice, his wonderful sense of humour and his love for, and loyalty to, family and friends.
The Foundation was established in 2008 as an independent, volunteer-run charity whose mission is to decrease work related psychological ill-health in the legal community and to promote workplace psychological health and safety.
In 2014, the Foundation formed its Victorian Committee, which aims to continue the great work of the Foundation for all members of the legal community in Victoria. The Victorian Committee is excited to host the inaugural Melbourne Lecture and it has been the driving force behind the formation of 'Pleading Sanity'; a free support group for members of the legal community experiencing mental health challenges. 'Pleading Sanity' is an informal group that is independent of any law firms or professional associations.

The Mishpatim Seminar in Israeli and International Law
January 7th till January 28th 2016 at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem
The word "Mishpatim" is Hebrew for "law". The Seminar is an intensive program (60 academic hours). Since its inception in 1993, the Seminar has been the Hebrew University’s most popular program for Australian university students. The Seminar is taught in English by leading Israeli academics, legal practitioners and judges. Particular attention is devoted to issues at the forefront of the Israeli legal system, including the search for a constitution, human rights and terrorism, and the interplay between international law and domestic law.
The program includes field trips to the Supreme Court of Israel, the Knesset (Parliament of Israel), a legal aid clinic for Jewish women who have been refused a religious divorce, Rabbinical and Military Courts and more.
Participants are required to complete formal examinations according to their stage of studies (JD, LLB etc.) including research essays, a written examination and/or an oral examination.
At the conclusion of the program, participants are issued with an official academic transcript by
HUJI. This could be counted as an elective towards your JD program!
