Trialing changes to the bulletin format

As of the next issue, we are going to trial a change to our bulletins.  Due to the volume of content, we will be sending a bulletin for news and policy updates and a separate one for funding and events. We will welcome your comments on whether this improves the usefulness and experience of our bulletins.  Contact june.macleod@gcvs.org.uk if you have any suggestions and feedback.

Important - Please read RE Children, Young People and Families Early Intervention Fund and ALEC Fund

There have been some amendments to the form, guidance and Q&A so make sure you read the most up to date version before submitting on your applications (on version 5 of the form) to EarlyInterventionFundsApplications@scotland.gsi.gov.uk by noon on 30th September.

Child Safe Scheme Announced

The Child Safe initiative will provide a quick and effective response to ensure children who become lost in Glasgow city centre are reunited with their parents or guardians as quickly as possible.

The Child Safe Zone initiative will use a variety of measures to reunite lost children with their families, with posters to be displayed around the city showing a helpline number which connects directly to the Glasgow Community Services Operations Centre.  A full list of particpating locations can be found at on the council website.

Glasgow City Council reverses decision on free bus passes

GCVS is delighted to report that in a move that will offer relief to struggling parents, Glasgow City Council has reversed its decision to lower the distance threshold for free bus passes, which was due to affect 1500 pupils.  More..

Named Person decision upheld

Scotland's most senior court has ruled the Named Person service is in the best interests of children and complies with law. The Named Person role, being introduced to provide a single point of contact for families, builds on the supportive role that teachers and health professionals have long offered to children, young people and parents. The Court's ruling confirmed that the legislation will have no effect on the legal, moral or social relationships within the family.  Read the Court of Session's full ruling.

Glasgow's pledge to raise attainment, achievement and aspirations of all city young people

Councillor Stephen Curran, Executive Member for Education and Young People is tasking every teacher to take up Glasgow's Improvement Challenge in a bid to raise attainment and achievement and continue to build on the success that was evident in the recent published exam results.  More...

The Early Years Collaborative - Improvement tests 
The Early Years Collaborative (EYC) is picking up pace with over 650 improvement tests of change now ongoing across the 32 Community Planning Partnerships.  Find out more about the improvement tests

UK Play Industry’s #nowhere2play Campaign
This campaign looks into the state of playgrounds and areas for children to play and calls on parents and carers across the UK to share their views on the state of local play facilities, their concerns about where their children will play in future and the role of government in protecting children’s right to play.

4Children Inquiry – Britain’s Families: thriving or surviving?
Children and families charity 4Children have recently launched a major Inquiry into modern family life in Britain, entitled “Britain’s Families: thriving or surviving”.   f you run a group or a service that 4Children could visit and hold a focus group with, please contact: ThrivingorSurviving@4children.org.uk. 
They are also running on-line surveys, and would like to hear from:-

  • children and young people about everyday family life – what is going well, and what you are finding hard. Survey link

Young Scot Survey 
Young Scot is currently in the process of developing a new three year strategic plan for 2016-19 and is looking for input from young people via their online survey.  Closing Date: 2nd October

Early Years Gender Stereotyping 
A survey to gather information on any resources or programmes already in existence, to learn lessons from existing approaches.

Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s Youth Champion Glasgow Workshop

  • Want to encourage others not to stand by when they see acts of hatred and discrimination?
  • Aged 14-24 and want to develop skills in raising awareness?

If this sounds like you then sign up to the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust’s Youth Champion workshops. As the next generation, you and other young people have a voice and the strength to ensure we don’t forget the extreme acts of hatred that took place during the Holocaust and genocides past and present.  During the workshop you’ll learn more about the year’s theme Don’t stand by, and explore the ways that we can make the world listen. Paul Hamlyn Foundation Ideas and Pioneers Fund 

The Paul Hamlyn Foundation is inviting applications from small constituted organisations that have unique ideas to improve the life chances and opportunities of individuals and communities in the UK.  Closing Dates: 12th October and 9th November.  More...

Erasmus+ Youth Partnership Funding Available 

UK organisations and/or groups of young people active in youth work can apply for funding for funding from Erasmus+ to develop partnership based activities for the benefit of young people. Projects can last between six months and three years. Applications must include a minimum of partners from three participating countries.. The maximum grant available is €150,000.

Erasmus+  Funding to Involve Young People in Dialogue with EU Policy Makers

Projects should give young people the opportunity to interact with decision-makers on issues of concern to young people and to influence policy. Projects can last between 3 to 24 months and do not need a partner from another country. The maximum grant available is €50,000. Closing Date:  11am on 1st October 2015. More...

Creative Scotland and Young Scot: Nurturing Talent - Time to Shine Fund

The Time to Shine Fund aims to support young people aged 14-20 who need financial help in developing their talent within the creative industry. The MacRobert Trust

The MacRobert Trust offers small grants to registered charities with a preference to support charities working in Scotland. Their current grant themes are : Services and Sea; Education and Training; Children and Youth; Science,Engineering and Technology; Agriculture and Horticulture.  Closing Date: 31 October 2015.  More...

Cattanach

The Cattanach Trust seeks applications for projects which support children from pre-birth to three years old, who are affected by levels of relative deprivation. Grants are usually between £3,000 and £25,000 a year, but may be more. Grants may be for up to 3 years, or longer in certain circumstances.  Applications may be submitted at any time.  More...
