It's a Good Time to Call

Early Birds have been flocking to the station in advance of Celebration 2015. We have received donations from 748 supporters – 76 of them new to the station. Early Bird contributions total more than $127,000.

If you’ve not already pledged, please consider an early gift. Your donation today means that we launch the on-air drive on October 13 with less to raise. Our original goal of $978,000 is already much reduced -- and that could mean a shorter drive! And read below for a special members-only event -- just another reason to become a part of the HPR family!

A donation before October 12 still qualifies for the Early Bird HawaiianMiles premium of 10 miles per dollar pledged (plus a 500-mile bonus for new members). Other thank-you gifts are also available, including a classic HPR logo t-shirt, CD combos, and Atherton tickets.

And perhaps this is a good time for you to become a Sustaining Member? Ask our Membership team if you have any questions about this hassle-free, automatic monthly payment plan.

Donate online now or call (808) 955-8821 during business hours. (Did you know you can now donate to HPR from Facebook?)

And if you're available to volunteer, we could use your help answering pledge calls. Sign up here.

HPR News Series: Following Up  starts Oct 5

Have you ever heard a story on the news and weeks or months later wondered what ever happened to those people or issues? During the week of October 5th, HPR News will revisit some of the stories our reporters have covered over the past year in a weeklong series called “Following Up.”
  • Political Reporter Wayne Yoshioka catches up on the case of an Army veteran, whose earlier experiences left him critical of the VA.
  • General Assignment Reporter Molly Solomon checks back with the graduates of a Women's Community Correctional Center's creative writing program, who have since transitioned to life "on the outside."
  • The entire News team follows up on their series “Trashing Paradise” and a new campaign to reduce food waste nationwide.
  • Plus, we're looking into the changed status of food stamp distribution in Hawaiʻi, prison visits on weekends, and seawater air conditioning.
Stories will air throughout the week of the 5th on Morning Edition (HPR-1) and All Things Considered (HPR-1 and 2), and will be posted on hpr2.org. And follow us @WeAreHPR.

A Curious Person’s Guide to The Magic Flute  Oct 5, 7pm

On Oct 5, at 7pm on HPR-1, it's everything (well, almost everything) you ever wanted to know about Hawaii Opera Theatre’s season opener, The Magic Flute. Hosted by HOT Executive Director Simon Crookall, this half-hour special gives listeners a primer on Mozart's effervescent opera, its history, plot, and musical highlights, plus a behind-the-scenes look at the current production through interviews with some of the principal artists.

Another Round of Applause  starts Oct 4, 4pm

If you missed the live concerts in our Atherton Studio (or if you’d like to hear some of them again), tune in starting Sunday, October 4, at 4pm for a new season of Applause in a Small Room on HPR-2. The first of the 13 episodes give you a sampling of the range of music you'll always find coming from this unique performance venue:  the alternative-folk-pop of Street Light Cadence; the easy, original melodies of North Shore favorites Ron Artis II and Thunderstorm Artis; and the powerhouse rhythm and blues of the Chris Vandercook Band, to name just a few.

Meet Booker T. in Atherton Studio  Nov 2, 7pm

Rock-and-Roll-Hall-of Famer, legendary frontman for Booker T. and the MGs, Booker T. Jones shares his music and memories with a few lucky HPR members in the Atherton Studio on Monday, November 2, at 7pm. Local host for All Things Considered Dave Lawrence hosts “A Musical Conversation with Booker T.,” which will resemble this intimate NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

To reserve your seats, call 955-8821 during business hours. For those not yet a member, we’ll be happy to take your pledge along with your reservation for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Booker T. will also be appearing at Hallowbaloo on October 31.

Fresh Faces at HPR

One likes Fleetwood Mac; the other, soul music. One comes to us from from online retail and event design; the other, a Chinatown arts incubator. Both are lifelong public radio listeners and, of course, both are Sustaining Members. Programs they’d take with them on a desert island? Science Friday and StoryCorps.

Meet our newest employees, Membership Coordinators Chloe Hartwell and Sarah Babin Bauer. We think you’ll enjoy comparing public radio notes with them when you call in your early gift or sign up to answer phones in Pledge Central. Chloe, Sarah, and the rest of our Membership Services team are standing by at (808) 955-8821.

Donate through Federal Payroll Deduction  thru Dec 15

Until December 15, Federal civilian or military employees may contribute to participating CFC charities via payroll deduction, cash, or check. For more information, go to the Hawaii-Pacific Area CFC site.

We'd be grateful if you'd select HPR. Please reference our CFC organization code: 53436.
