Academy Members - I'm so sorry to have more sad news to relay. It has been a tough week for the Academy. When I sent out the earlier note about Bob Toalson, I received this reply from Marilyn Henkel:
"I am sorry to tell you that Don Henkel died Monday, another Academy member. After Don directed the parks and recreation programs in Loveland, Co and Villa Park, IL for ten years, he earned his PH.D at the U. of Illinois. He then joined the staff at NRPA where his contributions were many. His life will be celebrated at a service in Florida on September 26 and again next summer at his beloved Lake Michigan cottage. From Marilyn Henkel"
I will continue to update you on information for both Don and Bob. From what I have heard about Bob, services for the family will be held this weekend, and a memorial service will be held in October. There were two lovely stories and an editorial about Bob recently in the Champaign-Urbana News-Gazette. You may read them at the links below:
Unfortunately, I'm not finished. We also learned recently that we lost Robert Reid in late July. Bob retired as President and Chief Executive Officer of Leroy Springs & Company in Fort Mill, SC in 1996 after having started there as the Recreation Director in 1956. He was a long-time Academy member and a lifetime trustee of the Academy Foundation. Here is a link to his obituary:
