Mental Health Care: Violence and Aggressive Behaviour - Contributing Factors, Personal/Intrinsic Factors (Part 2)

As victims or perpetrators, mental health patients are vulnerable to the risks associated with violence and aggressive behaviour. In inpatient environments in particular, violence and aggressive behaviour create a significant safety risk for staff, other people, and the person exhibiting the behaviour. All interventions should first ensure the personal safety of staff and the person, followed by attempts to de-escalate the behaviour using calm talk-down approaches. In all instances, prevention includes environment-of-care considerations, proper training for all staff, and an empathetic and understanding care culture.

You and Chemicals in the Workplace

Occupational illness normally develops over a period of time because of workplace conditions. Such conditions might include exposure to disease-causing bacteria and viruses, for example, or to chemicals or dust.

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, occupational illness is defined as a condition that results from exposure in a workplace to a physical, chemical or biological agent to the extent that the normal physiological mechanisms are affected and the health of the worker is impaired.

Some quick facts about health and safety within the healthcare sector.

There are more than 800,000 workers employed in Ontario's health care sector.  They work at more than 6,000 hospitals, long-term care homes, retirement homes, community care and other workplaces across the province.

Health care ranks second highest for Lost Time Injuries (LTI) among all sectors in Ontario.

As a healthcare provider, it's important to be aware of the safety hazards to prevent injury. As a result, the Ministry of Labour has identified the five most serious hazards and contributors to lost-time injuries (LTIs) in health care.

*       musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs): accounting for 41 per cent of LTIs
*       slips, trips and falls: accounting for 18 per cent of LTIs
*       exposures to hazardous biological, chemical and physical agents: accounting for 14 per cent of LTIs
*       contact-with/struck-by-object injuries: accounting for 10 per cent of LTIs

About the Flu
The flu is a serious illness that is caused by a virus. People experience a number of symptoms, including:
*       fever
*       muscle aches
*       extreme fatigue
For some people it can lead to pneumonia, which is a more serious illness. Some people can become very sick and will need hospital care. In Canada, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue as late as May. Peak flu season is in a 10 to 16 week period that usually starts in December. Between 10% and 20% of the population will get the flu each year.

Get the flu shot!
It's the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from the flu. Every year Ontario's flu shot program prevents 30,000 emergency room visits and 200,000 doctor's office visits. As a healthcare provider, you are at risk of getting the flu through exposure by patients you are caring for. Flu vaccination is available through your doctor, local pharmacy and through local Public Health flu clinics.
